Does School Affect Mental Health?

Many students deal with mental health problems whether they are small or big. These illnesses include anxiety, depression, and even just being burnt out. The big question is “ does school trigger this?” People who struggle with these problems already, are more likely to have more issues with attending school and keeping up with their mental health.

Academic pressure is a big cause for students to feel this way. Trying to keep grades up, and stay ahead causes anxiety for many. The weight of homework, tests, and overall grades is a big load to keep up with sometimes. It’s likely that these things cause students to feel immense pressure and sometimes freak them out. These academic stresses can leave students feeling overwhelmed and tired.

Social challenges are another big factor in students' lives. Peer pressure, bullying, and trying to fit in. Things like this can hurt feelings and get into their heads. Sometimes it can make them feel lonely and sad. Going through school feeling alone can cause depression and social awkwardness. School is the time of your life when you are supposed to learn how to act around other people, and some students don’t get the chance to interact with their peers. This can cause damage to their lives after highschool as well.

In conclusion there are a few aspects of school that can cause students to deal with mental health problems. Academic pressure and social challenges being the two main focuses. Highschool is a stepping stone in our lives, but can also be stressful. Find ways to get through it and make it more enjoyable. Stress is normal, but don’t let it consume you.

  • I think that school affecting your mental health depends on how you are taking it or looking on it.  It also depends on the person cause some are more affected than others on. I feel like this is caused by what is going on in your life or what is causing the mental health. I think that your peers can also be a cause of a lot of mental health, whether they are bulling you in a certain way. There are many ways I believe that school can cause mental health.

  • I think school affecting mental health is up to the person dealing with it and how they chose to deal with it. I belive they are many ways to overcome pressure and other problems in school, like getting a friend group or sum.

    • I agree with you school can be challenging and affect ones mental health but there are various ways to deal with the stress like playing a video game or going to the gym or just trying to relax.

      • You bring up a good point on how school can be challenging, school brings up issues for students like overload of homework and tests. You bring up a lot of good way too deal with this stress like you said, going to the gym, or playing games.

  • I believe that school does have a mental effect on some school students. Some more than others. Some people that struggle in school can have more effects on it and could cause more problems. There could be a way to help if there were people that these students were able to go to.

    • I agree with you, but I also think it affects more students in sports because they have more stuff to do after school and can get more stressed from the sport they are in. But students who don't do sports can go home and just relax for the rest of the day.

  • I think there are many ways to overcome schoo, related mental health problems. Some people just need to find a group of friends that will stand up for them instead of bullying or pressuring them. This could make a huge difference in some peoples mental health.

    • I agree with you, bullying can be a big thing to do with mental health issues, especially in schools with many people your age. People can make you believe that you don't belong, this really makes you ask yourself the same question.

  • I think depending on the situation school could definitely affect mental health. Some people are extremely affected and some not as much. I feel like if you are in school getting bullied or peer pressured to do stuff you don't want to everyday then it definitely could.

    • I agree wtih you. I think there are certain factors in school that affect students mental health and cause anxiety and depression. I feel like this affects some students more than others and there are defienetly ways to get through this.
