Should schools change the grading system?

So we all know how the school systems grading system works. The whole A,B,C,D, and F deal. It is known that if you are good at school you get A's and B's. And if you're not so good you get the lower letter grades like D's and F's. Many studies have shown that this is not ideal for learning. Getting A's only means you have memorized the information for the test and will most likely for get it later. The system focuses on memorization, which isn't learning. So more students each year struggle with maintaining grades and learning what classes are teaching. The grading system may not accuratly reflect what a student is learning. Some students may be learning more than others, but may not be able to apply the information as well.

If we look at the history of the grading system, it shows that they started the 100 point system so that teachers would have a system to rely on. It was started in the United States by schools like Harvard and Yale. But instead of telling you about it I'll just name some pros and cons of it.

Pros: People around the globe find it easier, everyone find the ABCDF system really easy to use and understand. It also compares students knowledge of certain skills to other students in the classroom. More so, it can help students try to work hard and succeed. A lot of students see it as a way to prepare themselves for the future, like college or a job. If a students dream job is to be a doctor or lawyer it can be a good thing for them. We all know to have a profession like that you need good grades to get into a good college or internship.

Cons: Many would say it is an unaccurate form of feedback. It doens't accuratly show what a student is learning and how they can use the information, it only shows how they applied what they memorized and put it on a test. Studies have shown that student will forget the information if they are not constantly using it. Which is why many teachers struggle to re-teach the information each year, because over summer, they will forget. It also gives a lot of stress and causes a lot of mental health problems for students. A lot of students find it dissapointing when they get a bad grade, and lots of it is from parents.

Our Parents and grandparents were taught that you have to get good grades. And that if you don't you may never succeed because jobs wouldn't hire someone who got bad grades and doesn't have a degree. But our world has changed since then, it shows that 73% of jobs don't care about GPA or grades in high school.

But I do think that if someone agrees with the grading system (gets good grades) then by all means keep trying to get good grades. It can be a good thing a lead someone to a very successful life.

Especially with a lot of countries besides the United States using a different system. In countries like Austrailia using a 70-100%=A system. And in Finland they use 1-10 scale, meaning if you get a 5-10 you pass and the higher up the score, would mean no different. Along with those countries homework rate being significantly lower than the United States.

But in the end most students will just memorize information, then throw it up on the test, and forget the information again. So it has proven to be somewhat unsuccesful towards our schooling system.

What do you think of the grading system?

Do you think it should be changed? Why or why not?

  • I think the grading systems now are pretty understandable and easy to know. I don't think that we should change are grading systems because As and Bs have been going on for many years now and theres not really an understanding on why we should change it all of a sudden.

    • Yeah I agree, that makes sense.

  • I think it's a little messed up, I feel as though our grades effect us a lot, getting A's we get prasied for, and getting B's and C's we get things taken away, or we get grounded. I do beileve that the grading system should be changed, it's kinda difficult to understand.

    • Yes, it can make things more difficult.

  • I think that the grading system should be changed a little bit. Personally, I like the grading system. But there are a few things that I would like to change about it. I think that tests and quizzes should not be graded with so much weight. I understand that tests are good for showing what people know but I think that more grades should be in the work that people do.

    • Yeah, even if it would change a little, it could help.

  • I think the grading system should be changed and should have a wider percentage range for each grade. If other countries have a different grading system then there shouldn't be a problem with having the same grades in the US. Even if it means students won't work as hard, some students who want to achieve the highest grade that they can will still pay attention to their percentage rather than their letter grade.

  • I think it is the same if its numbers and letters, it it just a grade. If they all have the same percentages it shouldnt matter. Grading helps kid understand what they need to work on and sometimes kids getting an F shows them that they need to work harder.

  • I think that the grading system is the best to prepare students for the world and working. how well you do on a quiz is just like how well you do at your job. I dont think tht it matters if we have letters or numbers as long as they still have the same percentages as the grading system now.

    • Yeah sure, I could see how you would think that.
