Should schools change the grading system?

So we all know how the school systems grading system works. The whole A,B,C,D, and F deal. It is known that if you are good at school you get A's and B's. And if you're not so good you get the lower letter grades like D's and F's. Many studies have shown that this is not ideal for learning. Getting A's only means you have memorized the information for the test and will most likely for get it later. The system focuses on memorization, which isn't learning. So more students each year struggle with maintaining grades and learning what classes are teaching. The grading system may not accuratly reflect what a student is learning. Some students may be learning more than others, but may not be able to apply the information as well.

If we look at the history of the grading system, it shows that they started the 100 point system so that teachers would have a system to rely on. It was started in the United States by schools like Harvard and Yale. But instead of telling you about it I'll just name some pros and cons of it.

Pros: People around the globe find it easier, everyone find the ABCDF system really easy to use and understand. It also compares students knowledge of certain skills to other students in the classroom. More so, it can help students try to work hard and succeed. A lot of students see it as a way to prepare themselves for the future, like college or a job. If a students dream job is to be a doctor or lawyer it can be a good thing for them. We all know to have a profession like that you need good grades to get into a good college or internship.

Cons: Many would say it is an unaccurate form of feedback. It doens't accuratly show what a student is learning and how they can use the information, it only shows how they applied what they memorized and put it on a test. Studies have shown that student will forget the information if they are not constantly using it. Which is why many teachers struggle to re-teach the information each year, because over summer, they will forget. It also gives a lot of stress and causes a lot of mental health problems for students. A lot of students find it dissapointing when they get a bad grade, and lots of it is from parents.

Our Parents and grandparents were taught that you have to get good grades. And that if you don't you may never succeed because jobs wouldn't hire someone who got bad grades and doesn't have a degree. But our world has changed since then, it shows that 73% of jobs don't care about GPA or grades in high school.

But I do think that if someone agrees with the grading system (gets good grades) then by all means keep trying to get good grades. It can be a good thing a lead someone to a very successful life.

Especially with a lot of countries besides the United States using a different system. In countries like Austrailia using a 70-100%=A system. And in Finland they use 1-10 scale, meaning if you get a 5-10 you pass and the higher up the score, would mean no different. Along with those countries homework rate being significantly lower than the United States.

But in the end most students will just memorize information, then throw it up on the test, and forget the information again. So it has proven to be somewhat unsuccesful towards our schooling system.

  • Great topic choice and well done Jeb!!

  • I don't think it should be changed since it's simple and it's easy. I don't think i would change it and it is perfect where it is and everyone knows how it works and knows what it is. It's also fine becuase students and parents can understand it and there is really no problems with it and I don't think it needs changed.

  • I think the grading system is perfect where it is currently. I don't think that the grading system should be changed becuase it is a good way of seeing how good or bad students are doing on their grades. It has been the same for so long that it would cause a lot of problems and people would not be happy if it were changed.

  • I do think changing our grading system would be difficult but I think it needs to be done. Grades have a big impact on students. Instead of being so focused on grades, we should focus more on actually knowing the material and learning instead of memorizing things.

  • I don't think that we should change the grading system. I think that we should keep the old fashion classic grading system. I think that if we changed it, it would make things complicated. I think that teachers can change the percentage for each assignment or test based on how complicated it is.

  • I think that the grading system should be changed, I don't think that a test should be the only way to show what you know. Some kids aren't good at taking test, and they end up being around 80% of your grade. I think that they should weigh out the homework and test so that people that aren't good at taking test have a chance too.

    • Yeah, that would be a good idea.

  • The grading system is definetly something that should be changed in our school. I know there are different ways of learning and showing how you know and how to use what you learned. Just because you don't do good on tests does not mean that you do not know the information. This is just because of showing work and how it is put into the test.

    • Yeah, testing doesn't really show if someone knows the information.

  • I think the grading system should be changed, it is unfair and causes a lot of students to think they are not doing well, but in reality, they are doing average work and putting in a lot of effort. I think Australia's grading system would be a much better alternative.
