History of Cheerleading.

I’m sure everyone has seen the cheerleaders on the sidelines, stunting, cheering, and supporting the team. But has anyone ever thought about how cheer began? And where did the idea of it come from? Cheer is actually a very complex sport that involves throwing or being thrown into the air. You have to have an insane amount of trust to let anyone just throw you and hope you'll be caught. The way cheer was brought up and into popularity is actually very interesting.

Cheerleading actually began in 1898 by a medical student by the name of Johnny Cambell. U of M (their football team) was falling behind, and he got a group of students together to energize the crowd and motivate the team. Originally cheer was a boys sport in the us. Though in the 1860s, Great Britain started cheering with, but with females originally.  They didn't think It would go anywhere, for a long time cheer wasn't considered a sport, merrily a hobby. And it didn't get popular until around late 1980s early 1990s, when cheerleaders started to be featured in teenage movies in highschool. They believed that Cheer was a big representation of American highschools. Cheerleaders are still shown in TV shows and Movies today.

Obviously since then cheer has advanced and become very popular. However, cheer wasn’t considered a sport until July of 2021, so many centuries later. I am sure many people who do cheer today have wondered at least once in their life where the bizarre idea of stunting started, Thank the six boys with Johnny Cambell. As cheer grew popularity in highschools, cheer teams used to have as much as 30 kids a team, even more if we get into all-star cheer. As we go through generations however, it has slwoed down and now most schools have 12-16 kids. Cheer has gone through multiple generations and still thriving today.

  • I am not a cheerleader but I think it would be pretty fun. I haven't considered cheer because I don't think im flexable enough. I think that cheerleaders add fun to football games because they cheer and do cool things, I also like how they do cheers with the student section.

  • I am not in cheer, however, I think it looks fun. If I was in cheer, I would want to be the person that gets thrown in the air. I think cheerleaders add lots of energy and fun to the football games. Even though it looks easy, I'm sure it is very hard to jump around for a whole game.
