Harlan Community Schools Bond

Have you heard about the bond to help the schools? Almost everyone has heard about it. Many people have been promoting the bond to help the schools, whether it be social media posts, letters in the mail, and posters. The bond wants to renovate and remodel the schools. All of the schools vary on age and how much they need remodeling. For example, the high school needs a lot of renovating, but the middle school only needs a few things done.

Voting took place on September 13th, 2022. The bond passed leading 2%. People knew late that night that the bond got passed, but they had to wait for the next day for clarification. So whats going to happen now? They are going to start with rebuilding the intermediate school, but that probably won’t start until summer of 2023. This renovation won’t get done in one summer; it could take almost 5-10 years to get finished.

Some examples of whats going to happen to the schools are: accessible playgrounds for elementary and intermediate, middle school gym air conditioned, new auditorium, secure entrances and more. All this stuff doesn’t come for free. Costs for this will be about 22.9 million dollars. It will increase peoples taxes in the harlan area, especially for farmers who own lots of land.

Pros- There are so many good things that could come from this bond. A good learning environment could help these future students do a lot better. The schools will be safer with the new entrances.

Cons- These renovations won’t be done or even started when we are out of high school. Taxes will be increased to harlan area. Farmers will get taxed a lot more due to more land they own.

  • Great topic choice and well done Mikayla!

  • I think it is really good that the bond got passed, just walking around our school you can see so many things that need fixed. And we will see most all of the renovations because they predict it will be done by the end of 2025. Also it is going to have to happen eventually, or people will not be able to use the schools. So taxes raising a little bit will not be that bad, especially because it is helping their community.

  • I think our school's new bond is a step in the right direction for our future. This project may take a long time but we will still be able to see some of the new additions before we graduate. If I was old enough to have any vote on school-related issues, I would vote yes for this project. These new renovations could make our school safer for the students and represent our town well.

  • I think that bonds in school would be a great idea. This would improve the school and eventhough we could not see it, it would be good for future generations. If I was old enough to vote I would vote yes because it will imrove many things such as the school safety which is very important.

  • I think that this bond is a great step for the future of HCS. Although a lot of us may never get to see it completely finished, we will still get to enjoy some of the new renovations before we graduate. If I were old enough to vote on school related issues, I would absolutley vote yes for this bond. As a student at HCHS and a member in our community, I believe that our school system greatly represents our town and it is important to better our program for years to come.

  • I think that the school bond is going to be a very good thing for our community. With having a new and safer facility, it will make the students feel safer in the building. Another reason it will be a good idea, is that we haven't had a new up date since 1958.

  • I think it is an amazing thing about the bond being passed because it will not only help students' education but it will make more students feel comfortable. If I was old enough to vote I would 100 percent vote yes, because even though taxes will rise it is worth kids getting a better education.

    • I agree. This bond is very good for the school. It will benefit almost everyone in Harlan area for example, musicals, plays, dance recidals, will have a new auditorium and will be safe and amazing.

  • I think it is a good thing for the school. It is a good thing that they want to remodle our 50+ year old school, cause it needs it. But if it won't be completely remodled until we are all gone and graduated, then as of right now it doesn't matter to me. Until I see that something has happened as far as the remodeling goes.

    • If the bond didn't get passed who knows if the school would ever get remodeled, Im glad that the community is come together and made a choice on which is best for the school.
