Can Animal Testing be Justified?

Animal testing has been around for a while and is used by many industries. Animal testing is a procedure performed on an animal to test whether or not a product is safe to use for humans. Techniques used by labs to test a product are force-feeding, injecting into muscles, bloodstream, or abdomen, or inhalation. Products that may be tested include medicines, chemicals, cosmetic products, cleaning products, or food additives. Commonly, animals like rats, mice, bunnies, hamsters, fish, cats, or even dogs are tested on. Some industries even commit to animal breeding in order to obtain their desired animal to test on.

Many people are against animal testing for many reasons; one being that animals are abused during the process. They are injured, physically restrained, and injected or fed chemicals that could harm or possibly kill them. It is estimated that over 115 million animals worldwide are used for testing each year, meaning 115 million animals each year are injured or killed in labs. Even if a chemical or product does not harm the animal, they are most likely still killed when the testing process is over. Another reason people cannot justify this is that animal testing is found to not even be useful, as animals don't have the same reaction to some products as humans would. Nine out of ten candidate medicines found to be safe and effective during animal testing did not have the same reaction when given to humans. This not only harms animals but puts humans in these trials at risk. There have been better and even more accurate alternatives to test products rather than animal testing.

Although it is harmful to animals, some people are still for animal testing, as this is supposed to find out if it is safe for humans or not. It has been around for years, and has never been a huge issue, so why bring it up now?

Some well-known products that test on animals include Axe, Bath and Body Works, Blistex, Clavin Klein, CeraVe, Clorox, Degree, Crest, Dior, Old Spice, MAC, Maybelline, Tide, VS, and many more.

Are you for or against animal testing?

Would whether or not a brand tests on animals affect whether you would use it or not?

  • Good summary and well done overall Isabelle! I would like to see more of your opinions within your summary. Also, be sure to comment back on three different days and a bit more frequenlty as well.

  • I don't think that animal testing is right. There are other ways to test things like human cell cultures. I usually check to see if a product I am using is tested on animals. I'm not going to completely let it stop me from buying the product but I do like to be mindful about what I'm paying for.

  • I think to a certain point that animal testing can be justified. When it is for medical purposes that actually help then it is okay. If it is just for make up and stuff like that then I do not understand why brands have to test on animals because that is just wrong. I am against animal testing in general unless it helps with developing medicine.

  • I think animal testing is needed since animals work very similarly to us. If you didn't test on animals we would either have to not test at all or test on people and risk killing them. But I do think there needs to be better ways to do testing but for now this is the best option there is.

  • I think animal testing would be a better option than anything else because they are the closest living thing that can be compared to us. It would be easier to assume what happens to the animals would happen to us because of there similar body structure.

  • I do think that animal testing is a necessary step in testing if a prodect is save for humans in many industries. I think that in some industries the usage of animal testing in unnecessary. I also think that we should be trying to find more humane methods of testing products on animals.

  • I don't think that there is any good reason for animal testing. In many instances, animals are abused severely abuse animals. If something needs to be tested before being used on animals, there are other ways to do so rather than abusing innocent animals.

  • i thonk animial testing is okay because not everything can be tested on humans and testing on animals first lets us know wether or not it is safe for humans to use or consume the product being tested.

  • Animal testing may be very helpful for making and testing new products but I think there could be a different way to test things. Why is it that the animals have to suffer and stuff like that. I think they should find a different thing to test on.

    • Yes, I agree. I forgot to add it up top but scientists have found ways to grow human cells in labs and test on them without having to harm human life.
