Are small Farmers dying the the USA?

Over the past years small farmers have been crushed by the price of their goods going there by the floor they have gone down by almost 50%. With their prices going down the price that it takes to produce their product is going through the roof. Leaving them razor thin margins also leave many if not almost all farmers with debt. The avg small family farm is 250k in debt. While a large operation is in 1.8M in debt. Leaving both in large amounts of debt with producing costs continuing to rise and the price of their goods not rising at all. Small farmers who are in the crop industry are taking a huge hit as all of the land for sale is selling at such a high price  that only the large sized farmer has the money to buy the land and it’s so competitive that it's almost impossible for them to expand. This is causing big farmers to get bigger and small farmers to get smaller and crushing the medium sized farmers too.

I think the small farmer is slowly but surely dying and that families won't be able to survive off of 300 acres and a couple animals. I think that large farms will take over the industry creating a monopoly and control the price of grain and ultimately food too. I think that we need to try and make sure that small farmers can survive and flourish in today's agriculture

Do you think that it is possible for a small family farm to survive in 2024?

Do you think that large farms are taking over?

How do you think farmers could get out of debt?

  • I think that in today's economy, it is very hard for small farmers to survive with not a lot of land and animals. This is happening because the big farmers are taking over and not letting small farmers grow and earn money.

  • Do you think that it is possible for a small family farm to survive in 2024? Yes farmers have always survived especially with the new seeds and technology.  Do you think that large farms are taking over? I think that big farms have always had more power and influence in the industry.

    • I think that you brought up a really good point when you said "? Yes farmers have always survived especially with the new seeds and technology." with new seeds and bring new better corn but those new seeds cost more and it would benifit farmer a lot of the price of the product rose not just new seed.

  • I beileve that larger farms are taking over and it is going to become harder for smaller family farm buisnesses to survive. The larger farms are all more profitable and have newer larger equipment which they produce more and quicker. It would be hard for smaller farms to come back out of debt but i dont think its impossible.

    • I agree with you when you said"I beileve that larger farms are taking over and it is going to become harder for smaller family farm buisnesses to survive" i also agree with you when you said "It would be hard for smaller farms to come back out of debt but i dont think its impossible. "

  • Do you think that it is possible for a small family farm to survive in 2024? I think it is because my family is surviving while my Dad runs a family farm. Do you think that large farms are taking over? I think that they are but there is still many smaller farmers.

  • Do you think that it is possible for a small family farm to survive in 2024? I think that it is possiable to survive in the USA as a small farmer. because we are small farmers and we have survived all this time I think that we can keep it alive alos I think that we are slowly getting smaller.

    • While it is possible for a small family farm to survive in 2024, it is most promising that in those cases involving nice markets, sustainable practices, and direct consumer sales. At the same time, given rising costs, competition, and attachment to the local community.

  • I think it would be hard but not impossible for small farms to make a sustainable living. I think that large farms are taking over which can be a good thing (unless you're a small farmer) because it could lead to mass production of food and goods which means lower prices for food. I'm going to be honest i have no clue how small farmers would get out of debt like that.

  • I think that its possible for a small family farm but not as likely to find sucsess as the bigger and more profitable farms. I think large farms are taking over because they have the newest and most efficent equipment which brings a much bigger yield. The small farmers could maybe get out of debt by  investing in new equipment such as tractors with built in GPS.
