Mr. Bruns told us the incentives to do well on the ITEDS. If we are all efficient, Bruns will bring us SNACKS!! Yay! We also get a chance for a large amount of extra credit.Ch. 5-2 Settling the Great Plains...Cont.-Jamestown was the first settlement.-Gov't gave land grants to railroads.-The Homestead Act gave anyone in the U.S. the right to file for an application to get 160 square acres of land if they moved to the West. -Land speculators in the Rockies cheated by taking land and not letting anyone else use it, and then sell it for a profit later.-Henry Washburn surveyed the North Western portion of Wyoming, obsorbed the natural beauty of land-Farmers faced many hardships such as droughts, blizzards, locus plagues. Didn't have much to build houses out of because trees were scarce. They built sod homes and dugouts. Everyone helped on the farm, and the inventions of the plow and reaper helped with planting and harvesting. Farmers put themselves in debt to buy this expensive machinery.
