Summary 10/9/09

Today we talked about Obama's Nobel Prize first of all and then we moved on to the Presentations again.Section 6-1 Expansion of Industry-What caused the Industrial revolution to really take off in the late 1800's?Lots of natural resources, government left businesses to do their own thing, "Captians of Industry" Rockefeller and Carnagy created huge businesses, growing urban population provided cheap labor and markets, oil became easier to get to, steel was being developed through the bessemer process (took carbon out of iron to make it stronger)-What were some new inventions in the late 1800's and what affect did they have on people's lives?Lightbulb by Edison- had a longer day and could work into the night and see much more easilyTypewriter- Allowed people to type and write faster and more legibly for some resources and easier to write data for businesses and for peopleTelephone- the invention of the telephone made the world much flatterSection 6-2 The Age of Railroads-What impact did railroads have on the US?Railroads pushed the creation of the timezones. Connected town and cities across the United States and new cities were created which promoted trade.-Why were many people upset with the railroads?-What did the Grangers or government do to regulate the railroads?
