Spanish American War-
- Splendid war- low deaths, we won land, short. In 1900's Spain was not very powerful, crumbling empire
- Us had been interested in Cuba for a long time- tried to buy in 1854- a lot of it was controlled by rich Americans
- Soviet Union sent nuclear to Cuba - Cuba is all illegal to US, communist leaders- bad people / leader--
- Spain would not sell to US
- Cubans revolting against Spain because they wanted independence . US started feeling bad for them

- - 1895 Civil War broke out in Cuba between Spain and the Cubans
- Newspapers would write stories pro Cuba, against Spain. Vise verse, everyone believed what they read and the news writers made people take sides and pushed us to support war against Spain. -- How Americans found out. Made Spanish look terrible compared to Cubans
- Causes of War-
- The Sinking of the USS Maine- 1898 , sent to protect American interest, and sent the message to stop messing with us, gets blown up, Spain is blamed. It was actually an internal explosion of ammunition dump , really was an accident
- The Yellow Press- newspapers, no one would have known what was going on - they wanted war- $ for them- instigator, they made people feel sorry for Cubans ,
- Butcher Weyler and his treatment of Cubans in concentration camps - he was sent to Cuba from Spain to keep things in control- the ones revolting went into camps - yellow press made him look like he was "butchering" the Cubans.
- **The De Lome Letter- insult to US- Spanish Ambassador of US, wrote how McKinley who is weak and spineless - national insult
- Jose Martis destruction of US property in Cuba- to make it look like Spain did it - to get USA to help Cuba, they couldn't do it on their own . We had worked with him, we tried helping him. It worked and we sent ships down to protect our interest.
- William Hearst- newspaper writer and Joseph Pulitzer- competed for the peoples interest and famous for their writing in the war
- To help them get independence
- William McKinley- wanted to avoid war, called a coward for giving in , people wanted imperialism, after letter and sinking USS Maine war came
- 1898 declared war of Spain- imperialist and anti - people either wanted to take them over or give them independence
- Teller Amendment- Cuba would be guaranteed independence after war , and we still got Guam and Puerto Rico, Philippians
- American went into Manila Bay and won quickly with support from the Filipino people
- Emilio Aguinaldo is a Freedom fighter
- American took Philippines for a base and started another war.
- Admiral William Sampson head of U.S. Navy in Caribbean
- Teddy Roosevelt of the Rough Riders/Calvary but was infintery unit in Cuba left his position of deputy naval officer

- Treaty of Paris- 1898 end of war Spain gave Cuba independence
- Hawaii was also added to america during 1898
- The US not ready for military, but The Navy was excellent.
- 3,000 US soldiers died in war only 385 battle deaths
- Lasted April 25 - August 12, 1898
- Became an empire for the first time in history.
