Chapter 6, Lesson 2 continued...Charles (Charlie) Darwin wrote evolution, and the survival of the fittest, natural selection-the strong survive, the weak die out. Businesses used these theories... the strong businesses survive and the weak die out, which is why Carnegie and Rockefeller created monopolies.Labor Unions were the people who went on strike to get better working conditions. The labor uninons were the people who brought us the weekend, child labor laws, overtime, minimum wage, injury protection, workmen's compensation insurance, pension security, the right to organize, ect. The labor union had power because of their large numbers. It would be like the all teachers across America going on strike, because of their large number they would most likely prosper. Most countries made labor unions illegal. Labor Unions obviously hust big business, because back then the factory owners took advantage of the workers, and they did not want all of the workers to go on strike. Child and women labor laws were the first thing the Labor Unions got. Labor Unions were not always succsessful, generally, everybody in this period were against the strikers. All the strikers really wanted were better working conditions, but it was very difficult to fight the powers against it.. they were succsessful in the matter of over the years in how much they accomplished at getting better working conditions for the people of today.Farmers and the Populous MovementChapter 5, Lesson 3Farmers Unite to Address Common Problemslate 1800s prices for crops were falling, farmers mortgages their farms, good farming land was becoming limited, railroads were charging high prices for shipping and storageEconomic Distressbanks were foreclosing, greenbacks were taken out of the governments circulation, farmers had to pay back loans in dollarsProblems with Railroadsfarmers paid high amounts to transport grain, railroads made secret aggreements with middlemen, it influenced the market of crops, lack of competitionThe Farmer's AlliancesOliver Hudson Kelley started the Patrons of Husbandry, it became known is the Grange, they fought against the railroads, the membership grew to more than four million, the southern alliance was the biggestThe Rise and Fall of PopulismPopulism is the movement of people, on July 2, 1882 the Populist Party Convention was in Omaha, it demanded to give people a greater voice in their government and to lift the debt from the farmers and the common people like the factory workersThe Populist Party Platformthe election of US senators by popular vote, single terms for the president and vice president, a secret ballot to end vote fraud, which meant you were voting and nobody knew what you were doing, so this ensured that nobody knew who you voted for, this was very important in letting the common people have a part in our government. called for restriction on immagration because the immigrants were willing to work for way way lower wages, and an 8 hour work day, they also called for a graduated income tax, which meant that people that got paid more had a higher income tax, and they called for an increase in mone supply resulting in inflation so their cops would be worth more. candidate won almost 10% of the total vote, platform of the Democratic Party, the populists were the people who said the people should vote, and ev entually this became legal in the seventeenth ammendmentThe Panic of 1893farmers were overextended with debts and loans, many railroads went bankrupt, the gold supply was running low, people traded money for gold, silver mines closed, and 15,000 businesses and 500 banks collapsed
