Mr. President Elect '08

Like most people in the US that were younger than 18 on November 4, 2008, I was oblivious to the details of the presidential election due to the fact that voting was technically illegal for us.But near the end of October, strangers started calling my house on behalf of John McCain.

"Obama for America" ads began playing at work on KNOD 24/7.

Candidate signs sprung up in yards all over Harlan.

Giving in to the pressure, I became slightly interested in this politics dealy.I saw Barack Obama speak last year when he came to Harlan. He had such an awesome personality and he seemed extremo nice(This was back when I wasn't interested in the politics dealy). Since there were about a million other candidates at the time and I knew nothing about any of them, I decided to support Obama. Good reason, don't ya think?

These are a couple pictures of Obama in the commons in the middle school last year.(They're from my phone so they're sort of poor quality.)As the primaries/caucuses began, TV and radio was basically about the election and the candidates. Still apathetic, I paid no attention.About a month ago, I was in English when the class asked Mrs. Lansman about her views on the election. Her reply of, "I don't like killing babies," was very narrow but for some reason it got me thinking about the opinions of Barack Obama and John McCain.Since abortion is a pretty big topic in the political party differences, it's important to know that John McCain, a republican, is pro-life. Barack Obama, a democrat, is pro-choice. Personally, I'm pro-life like the Lansmanator.

A few weeks later, a printed-out email was brought into the same class by a student. The email was obviously "anti- Obama". According to it, Obama doesn't stand at attention when the flag is displayed and the star-spangled banner is played. Why? Because he thinks both are symbols of war and not peace. Whether this email was credible or not, I can definitely see where someone's coming frim on that but it's a bit radical.I found out more about McCain and decided he is a pretty cool guy. I was hasty making the decision to back Obama so early. Now don't get me wrong, I don't mind Obama. Like I said, he's got an awesome personality. But McCain's just a little more me.My reaction to the election? No surprise. I don't think it was to many people. Obama is the change people are looking for. It may be cliche, but from this election I learned that not caring because you can't vote is a big mistake. Being in-the-know can give you the power make your opinion heard by others who haven't formed an opinion yet and that can be just as big of a deal as voting if you make it.

And who ever knew CNN was so addicting?-Sara
