Barack Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize, in which I think he does not deserve. We are continuing with presentationsCh. 6-1 The Expansion of industryWhat caused the Industrial Evolution to really take off?1. U.S. had a lot of natural resources- very lucky, don't have any.. not successful industrial evolution2. Gov't support for business (laissez-fairre) (stayed out of the businesses, very few laws, always sided with them)3. Growing urban population that provided cheap labor- immigration4. Captains of industry (John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnigy.. wealthy people)5. Oil, railroads, steel. Bessemer process- force air into melted iron which takes carbon out, lasted longer than iron (steel)What were some inventions in the late 1800's and the effect on lives?1. Light bulb by Thomas Edison- work in dark/night, days got longer,2. Typewriter by Christopher Sholes- can type notes, revolutionized businesses (typing)\3. Telephone by Alexander Graham Bell- made the world flat, revoltionized businesses and peoples' lives (communication)Ch. 6-2 The Age of the RailroadsWhat impact did railroads have on the US?Why were many people upset with the railroads?What did the Grangers or government do to regulate the railroads?-Granger Laws allowed states to make sure railroads were setting fare rates for everyone to be fairRailraods expanded to the Mississippi River and then the Missouri. The first Transcontinental Railroad met in Promintory, Utah. Railroad workers were locomotive engineers, freight handlers, and repaired rolling stock. Railroad times caused problems cause each town ran on it's own time. C.F. Dowd thought of dividing into time zones, and in 1883 towns synchronized their watches. Towns were connected by railroads which helped trade (Denver and Seattle)
