Asians started coming over through the Pacific for the gold rush, many found jobs on Hawaii, but the asians where treated poorly. and many people came from south america for mainly work. the Pacific immigrants went through Angel island, which was similar to the East coast's Ellis island, but much harsher conditions to get in, which was due to the fact that they didn't want Asians in.
