Free Choice Blog: History of Gatorade

In 1965 4 medical researchers Robert Cade, Dana Shires, Harry James Free, and Alejandro de Quesada all from the University of Florida created Gatorade a thirst quencher. The gators where not doing to well and coach Ray Graves was frustrated with the team. That's when he turned to Cade the team doctor and asked him and his associates for the insight. The original drink was lemon lime and named Gatorade after the Gators. The gotors thanked gatorade in there Orange Bowl win against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in 1967. Bud Carson head coach of the Yellow Jackets replied they lost cause they didnt have Gatorade and it made the difference. Cade later went on to Stokely-Van Camp, Inc. to produce and distribute the product. Quaker Oats Company bought S-VC in 1983, after a bidding war with rival Pillsbury. Quaker later went on to sell it to PepsiCo but they changed the trade ingredients and called it All Sport. Quaker went on and sued PepsiCo and won. In 1973 Cade settled agreements with the University of Florida and they recieve all the royalties. Gatorade is the official sports drink of a lot sports now a days. It has now expanded its flavors along with expanding marketing to the UK in 2008. In my opinions it truely was the Gators Aid to a bad season. I still prefer the original lemon lemon lime flavor but, light blue frost is pretty good too.
