  • George Washington- Commanding general, First president of the US
  • John Hancock- Soldier

Louisiana Purchase-

  • Name 5 states that were added to Louisiana Purchase- Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee

Christopher Columbus

  • Born in 1451
  • Sailed with Nina and the Pinta
  • He was in Santa Maria
  • Started new era of expeditions and xploration
  • Established "New World"
  • Brought riches and luxery back to his country
  • Kidded/caused the death 250,000 Natives
  • Started Native American Slave trade across Europe

The Pilgrims-

  • Person or group who travel for sacred or religious reasons
  • Moved to England once the royalty changed the national church
  • Want to practice own religious beliefs
  • Moved to America on the Mayflower and colonized in Plymouth in 1620
  • 102 people on the Mayflower
  • November 11th 1660- Signed the Mayflower Compact
  • 1632- First "thanksgiving" celebration with the Indians after harvest season
  • One man passed away; passengers believed it was karma
  • One baby boy was born
  • Many cases of seasick
  • 102 passengers along with the crew were on board
  • One man over-board; saved him with ropes
  • Started first Thanksgiving holiday
  • Helped start the development of the US
  • They took land from the Natives

Civil War-

  • Started April 12, 1861
  • Bloodiest battle in the US
  • Mainly about slavery
  • Fort Sumter - South Carolina Confederate
  • Fort Henry- Tennessee- Union
  • Gettysburg- Pennsylvania- Union
  • Abraham Lincoln- Issued Emancipation Proclamation, Union Commander in Chief, proclaimed all people held as slaves in the Confederacy as forever free (Emancipation Proclamation), Assassinated by John Wilkes Booth
  • Ulysses S. Grant- General of the Union, 18th president, Accepted Robert E. Lee's surrender on April 9, 1865, Abe's right hand man
  • Robert E. Lee- Fought for confederate, Surrendered to General Grant at the Appomattox Court House in Virginia
  • Union won because they had more industry
  • Negative- Many family members and people had been lost and the east was left in ruin. 
  • Positive- Law of slavery had been discontinued and the people in slavery had been released and because true citizens of the US

Early Industrial Revolution-

  • Great stepping stone for the new era of machine
  • 1712- Steam Engine was invented
  • 1764- Spinning Jenny
  • 1769- Improvement on Steam engine
  • 1794- Cotton gin
  • 1844- Telegraph ; sent messages quickly
  • More jobs were created 
  • Kids had hard jobs; cleaning machinery

American Revolution- 

  • Between Great Britain and America 13 colonies
  • George Washington- Commander of Continental army
  • Ben Franklin- One of the 5 founding fathers
  • February 1778- Signed a military alliance
  • Provided soldiers, supplies, money

Battle of Lexington and Concord-

  • April 19, 1775
  • 700 troops came upon 77 militiamen
  • British moved towards Boston
  • 2000 minutemen
  • Arrived back to Lexington where British reinforcements came to support them
  • Could've finished them off

Battle of Yorktown-

  • French Navy departed for Chesapeake Bay
  • French Navy and Continental army had 17,000 troops to attack
  • Improved peoples way of living; gained independence
  • Trade freely with other countries
  • War destroyed relationship between the two
  • Refused to sell British goods, hurting the economy

Battle of Gettysburg-

  • Largest battle of the way
  • 85,000 Union vs. 75,000 Confederate
  • Slavery was put to an end
  • North modernized the South
  • War put brother against brother and families were split apart
  • Many years after war to rebuild damage
  • 620,000 soldiers died for America to stop fighting

Slavery-

  • Started when they first brought African Slaves in 1619
  • Started slavery in Jamestown for tobacco
  • In 1830-1850. movement to abolish slavery in America led by Frederick Douglas

The War for Independence-

  • 1775-1783
  • deaths anywhere from 20,000-30,000

Mexican/American War-

  • Started in 1846-1848
  • First US armed conflict fought on foreign soil
  • Over 13,000 American soldiers killed by 1.5% of that was from combat
  • Received Southwest part of US
