Chapter 5 section 3-What problems did farmers face on the Great Plains?Railroad prices, and banks forclosing, living in sod houses.-Who were the Populists and what did they believe in?The populists was mostly farmers who wanted to give more power to the people. Also known as the peoples party. They believe in an increase in the money and circulation supply. (inflation, to charge more of their crops) Gradulated income tax- the more you make, the more you pay. Rich usually payed 40%. For every ten dollars you make, you must give four away. Direct election of U.S. Senators- The people directly elected. State Legislators used to pick wealthy, white, men. Single Terms for presidents/vice presidents. Secret Ballot for voting- noone know who you are voting for. Eight hour work day, and restrtictions on immigration(they took jobs and kept wages low) If you wanted an increase in pay, they would fire you because they could hire immigrants who would work for nearly nothing.Hardshipfarmers were enduring hardtimes in the late 1800'scrops were failingrailroads were taking advantage of farmers. If there was only one railroad, farmers had to pay a lot to use them. They would tell the railroad companies to make the prices lower otherwise they wont use it.Oliver Hudson KellyBecame known as the grange. The grange is a group of people who fight the railroads. Made up of farmers. Spent most of time fighting the railroads.
