Today Ashley finished up on her presentation. 1889 major land give away in Oklahoma andOklahoma got the nickname the sonner state because they claimed land sooner than they should have.Henry D. Washburn and Nathanial P. Langford protected the wilderness. In 1872 the yellowstone national park was created.Hardships: droughts, floods when it rained, wilf fires, raids by outlaws and indians.Homes in the plains: dugouts in the side of the hill, stacked blocks of prarie turf, warm in winter and cool in summer. fireproof but leaks when it rains.Trees werent around so they had to stick with dirt homes.Womens work: planting and hrvesting, shering sheep and making clothes our of wool. helped with wells and carried buckets of water, skilled in doctoring, canned fruits and vegitables.farm equipment: 1837 john deere invented steel plow, 1874 barbed wire1830 took 183 min to produce one bushel of grain and in 1900s took 10 min to produce one bushel.1855 John Deere sold 10,000 plows a year. made to cut through hard prarie soil.Morril act: gave land to help finance ag colleges gave each state 30,000 acres of public land. land was sold for money for college.Bread basket of the nation: techniqes used to help dry farm, helped fields grow.Debt: machinery was expensive and had to borrow money. wheat prices went high so they could afford more. 1870s bonanza farms were created by railroad company. farm of 15,000 - 50,000 acres.railroads charged more in west than east.
