Whitney was absent today so we could not continue with her presentation. Trace is also gone so we're skipping 6.1 and going to 6.2. This is Greg's topic. Mr. Bruns showed us the key questions for Chapters 5-8.Since Whitney was gone, Mr. Bruns went over some of the rest of her section. Her section was called Farmers and the Populous (sp) Movement.Chapter Six Section Two was presented by Greg. Age of the Railroads is section two. Richard Ely was a railroad guy. Pullan, Illinois was the town of a huge train car company. They had to create time zones because of trains and to factor in some time. There was almost a twelve minute time change between Boston and New York. In a company town, there is one main city. Mostly everyone works for the company, every shop is run by the company. Companies gave out scrips for payment to the works and the scripts could only be used at the stores and companies in that town. Farmers had issues with the government would give railroad companies land for the railroads and they would somehow sell the land grants to surrounding companies for the land. Other problems farmers had with the railroad companies that the companies gave the land to seperate companies instead of giving the land back to the farmers. The Granger Laws was passed in 1871. Some of the laws were proven to be unconstitutional. The Interstate Commerce Act is 1887 and it helped to secure past laws. The ICA (interstate commerce act) allowed states to set up maximum rates. This organization was a group of men that regulated the railroads so everyone was treated equally. The ICA was eventually shot down. Later, Teddy Rosevelt sorta brought it back but changed some things.-What impact did railroads have on the US?They really pushed for the time zone change. Help transportation and develope the west. Made our country united and smaller place. Providing alot of jobs, making railroads, steel, iron, goods.-Why were many people upset with the railroads? The railroad companies gave the land grants to surrounding companies instead of giving them back to the farmers for farming. Unfair prices, unfair rates.-What did the Grangers or government do to regulate the railroads?A group of farmers. Tried to get state laws passed so prices of everything were they same or equal for everyone. The Supreme Court said states can make laws that set maximum rates. (.To regulate the railroads.)
