Wednesday, the 14th...the following are questions we did not finish going over from yesterday....6.3-What was Social Darwinism and how did it apply to business?> Survival of the Fittest (the strongest survive) why animals became extinct, the weak couldnt survive.-business, carnegie and rockefeller would take this and say according to the rules of nature, we're supposed to take over weaker businesses. carnegie and rockefeller would drive weaked businesses out of business.-What are labor unions and what is their purpose?> labor unions power in numbers. they have accomplished alot over the years, examples- weekend, child labor laws, over time pay, minimum wage, injury protection, workmens compensation insurance, pension security, right to organize, etc... mid 1800's, labor unions started to show and work the way they work today. the struggled tremendously and over time they slowly started to begin, went on strike. child and women labor laws were some of the earliest results to labor unions.-Were labor unions successful in achieving their goals? Explain/Give examples> no and yes. at first they were not sucessful, alot of strikes took place. most people in the 1800's were against the strikes.Whitney returned from being sick for almost a week, and she went over the rest of her presentation.Chapter 5 Section 3..- Farmers and the Populist MovementIf a bank forecloses on your farm the back takes over your farm. Money became worthless. Farmers paid high amounts to transport grain. Railroads made secret agreements with middlemen. It influenced the market price of crops. There was a lack of competition. Oliver Hudson Kelley started the Patrons of Husbandry and then became known as the Grange. They fought against the railroads. The membership grew to more than 4 million the Southern Alliance was the biggest. Populism is the movement of the people.On July 2, 1882, a populist party convention was in Omaha and it demanded to give people a greater voice in their government and to lift the debt from the farmers and other workers. The Populist Party Platform, the election of the U.S senators by popular votes, single terms for the president and the vice-president, a secret ballot to end vote fraud, called for restriction on immigration and an 8 hour work day, candidate won almost 10% of the total vote.The Panis of 1893, farmers were overextended with debts and loans. Many railroad companies went bankrupt. Gold supply was running low. People traded money for gold. Silver mines were closed. 15,000 businesses and 500 bank collasped...Key Questions..-What problems did farmers face on the Great Plains?-Who were the Populists and what did they believe in?> farmers and common people were setting up to Populist.
