Monday- No School due to the weather.

January 25th- January 29th

Monday- We took a political quiz, and we voted on who we would like to win president

Tuesday- We took a test over the 1920's

Wednesday- Looked at our tests, and started watching the 1930's videos.

Thursday- Went over the video that we watched yesterday. Got into our groups that we are testing with, and we got a seating chart.

Friday- We got new Forum Post leaders, talked about extra credit for the caucus on Monday.We watched some more videos.

January 4th- January 8th

Monday- No School

Tuesday- Mr. Bruns went over his classroom rules and expectations today.

Wednesday- We heard what articles that the Forum Post Leaders put up. We also chose groups that we are in, we also split up topics depending on which decade you are doing. 

Thursday- We started researching our topics for our presentations

Friday- We continued researching our topics.

December 14th-18th

Monday- We went over the Forum Post Leader's Topic's. We also Continued taking notes on World War 1

War Industries Board- Headed by Bernard Baruch, Regulated industry in the U.S., Encouraged mass production, Under the War Industries Board, industrial production in the U.S. increased 20 percent

Food Administration- Headed by Herbert Hoover, urged people to conserve food, Had "meatless days" and "wheat-less days", "Victory Gardens" were planted by schools and homes, prevented hoarding of food by people, "Food is Ammunition- Don't waste it."

National War Labor Board- Settled disputes between workers and employers, discouraged strikes, "Work or Fight", Headed by William H. Taft.

United States- lost almost 117,000 people in World War 1 from all causes, 53,000 for battle deaths.

All countries had about 11 million deaths during the whole war.

Tuesday- We started going over Part 3 of World War 1.

Paris Peace Conference- The meeting of the Allied victors following the end of WW1 to set the peace terms for Germany and Other defeated Nations. It took place in Paris in 1919 and involved diplomats from more than 29 countries. They came up with a Series of Treaties that reshaped the map of Europe.

Big Four- Four different Country Leaders who came up with the Treaties. Italy, Great Britain, United States, and France.

Wilson's 14 Points-

  • The fourteen points was a speech delivered by President Woodrow Wilson to COngress on January 8,1918
  • The speech became the basis for the terms of the German surrender, as negotiated at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919
  • Other Allied countries did not like the 14 points.

  1. An end to secret treaties
  2. Freedom of the Seas
  3. Free trade for all countries
  4. Disarmament
  5. End to Colonial Claims
  6. Self-Determination for all countries-Russia
  7. Restoration of Belgium
  8. Restoration of France

  11. Romania,Serbia,and Montenegro should be evacuated and restored

Territorial Losses

The following land was taken from Germany:

  • Alsace-Lorraine(given to France)
  • Eupen and Malmedy (given to Belgium)
  • Northern Schleswig (given to Denmark)
  • Hultschin (given to Czechoslovakia)
  • West Prussia, Posen, and Upper Silesia (given to Poland)

The Saar, Danzig, and Memel were put under the control of the league of Nation.

Germany was forbidden to unite with any country to gain land.

Germany had to pay $33 billion in war reparations.

Wednesday- We finished going over Mr. Bruns power point on World War 1 and then we had some free time to study.

Thursday- We went over any extra credit presentations that were a battle that America fought in during World War 1. We also went over how semester tests are going to go.

Friday-We had a work day to study and go over what we are talking about for the test.

December 7th- December 11th

Monday- We went over the Forum Post Leaders Topics, we talked about test retakes, and we talked about what was going to be on the semester test and if we would like to take it as a group or not. We also started going over WW1.

Allied Powers- US- Did not enter till 1917,Great Britain, France, Italy, Russia, Greece, Albania, Serbia

Central Powers- Germany, Austria Hungary, Bulgaria, Ottoman Empire

Tuesday- We started going over the Causes of World War 1.

Wednesday- Mr. Brun's is gone, so we had a day to review and study for the Semester 1 Test.

Thursday- We continued going over World War 1. We also turned in our ITBS scores for extra credit, then we decided what we are going to do for the semester test either in a group or individual.

Shell Shock- Continuous gun fire and people start having a nervous breakdown from it.

Friday- We got a new Forum Post Leader, we talked about what time we are coming in for our Semester Test.

1916 - Wilson won and platform was: "he kept us out of war." for two almost 3 years

Causes for U.S. involvement in WW1

  • German sinking of British ships and killing of U.S. citizens
  • Great Britain and Germany were both stopping U.S. ships
  • Germany declared unrestricted submarine warfare.
  • 1915 Lusitania 

  • Germany tried to get mexico to declare war on the United States 
  • Germany promised Mexico that they would get the Mexican Cession back if they won 
  • Germany wanted to keep the US out of Europe 
  • War hawks - teddy believed we should be at war and help them out. 
  • Trade with England increase.
  • British and American propaganda 
  • Preparedness Program - U.S. started arming and preparing for war.
  • American business - Munition business pushed U.S. into war to make money

November 30th- December 4th

Monday- No School due to unpredictable weather.

Tuesday- Forum Post Leaders told us there topics and then Mr. Bruns finished going over his Chapter 10 power-point. We also had time to Review for the Chapter 9 and 10 test.

Dollar Diplomacy-President Taft: 

Using the US government to guarantee loans to foreign countries by US banks and businesses

Economic Imperialism

US banks were in control of many businesses in Latin America

US said it was needed to keep European powers out of Latin America

"Substituting dollars for Bullets"

US would not recognize any government that was oppressive, undemocratic and hostile toward the US

Used extensively in Latin America

Monday- Mr.Bruns went over the Spanish American War.

Tuesday- We continued going over the Spanish American War

November 16th- 20th

Monday- We went over our classes forum post leaders topics, and Mr. Bruns started on his presentation on Chapter 10. We then received a word that we had to do little skits on and the rest of the class had to guess our word.

Protectorate- It is were one country is more protective of another country: Example: United States is protecting Cuba

Tuesday- Mr. Bruns talked about how we are going to do our semester tests and then we finished presenting our little skits we were doing yesterday.

November 9th- November 13th

Monday- Mr. Bruns went over his presentation on Chapter 9, Section 4.

Tuesday- We finished presenting Chapter 9, Section 4, and we started Section 5.

Adamson Act- Strikes in the railroad, President Wilson, Act gave railroad workers: required additional pay for overtime work, 8 hour work day, Act was passed in 1915

Keating-Owen Act: 1900 census-2 million children, National child labor Committee hired Lewis Hines, was passed in 1916 by congress, Ruled unconstitutional in 1918

Clayton Anti- Trust Act: Companies could not buy stock from other companies if it resulted in monopoly, Officers of that company will be prosecuted in court, Labor Unions/ farm organizations- no antitrust laws, Boycott and strike with no interruption

Federal trade Commission Act- "Watchdog" Agency, periodic reports from corporations, 400 cease and desist orders

Federal Farm Loan Act- 12 federal land banks, Farm Credit System, long term loans with low interest

Underwood Tariff Act- 1913, Graduated income tax, very low

Federal Reserve Act- Introduced a Central Bank, 12 Federal Reserve Banks able to print money, Economic Stability, Fed could adjust discount rate/funds and buy and sell U.S. Treasuries

US Neutrality in WW1- Wilson kept US out of the great war from 1914-1917, Must be neutral in fact as well as in name, Impartial in thought as well as in action, Traded with both sides, ports were open, non-military use, Actions by Germany made America favor the Entente Powers

Wednesday-  Early out! Veterans Day Program! 

US Neutrality is WW1- had troubles getting any goods, warned Germany if any Americans died there would be consequences, submarine warfare was new for Germany. 120 Americans out of the 1,200 causalities, entered the war on April 6, 1917.

Policy towards African Americans- Washington was highly segregated except in federal offices, He encouraged people to reverse the idea of no segregation in the federal offices, Permitted segregation in federal offices, many petitioned

November 2nd- November 6th

Monday- We finished presenting family history projects, and Mr. Bruns reviewed Chapter 9 Section 1. 

Capitalism- Economic System, chance to go from rich-poor, people control there own businesses

Socialism- Social and economic system, Government owned, elimination of private property, property and distribution of wealth are determined by the government

Fostering Efficiency- Assembly line, Henry Ford payed workers $5 a day, Increased efficiency, Progressives also worked for better efficiency in all levels of government

Tuesday- We watched a video on taking the White House- The Men Who Built America

Wednesday- Mr Bruns finished reviewing the sections we went over already and then we continued presenting our projects. Shortened Classes because of Cyclone Way

Reforming Elections- States adopt secret ballot Direct primary, Initiative- A bill originated by the people rather than lawmakers, Referendum- When voters accept or reject the initiative, Recall-enabled voters to remove public official from elected positions, 17th and 19th amendments

Direct Election of Senators- 17th amendment, 1913, Direct Election of U.S. Senators- People of the state are going to vote for there state senators

Chapter 9, Section 3-

Roosevelt's Rise- Born in 1858, Active Childhood, Police Commissioner, lead the rough riders, Elected Governor of New York. Modern Presidency-President in 1901, Surprised People, Advancing Programs- Personality, Popularity, Leadership, Publicity, Believed it was the presidents duty to assist everyone if they can't unless the law forbids him to do so. Trust Buster- Prosecuting Monopolies, 1902 ordered the Justice Department to sue the northern Securities Company, 1904 Supreme court got rid of the company

1902 Coal Strike- 140,000 coal miners in Pennsylvania went on strike, 20% raise, nine hour work day, organize a union, 1903 the commission issued a settlement, 10% raise, nine hour work day, union, Since this the president should intervene when a strike threatens public welfare and the federal government.

Railroad Regulation- Elkins Act-1906- Illegal for railroad officials to give, and shippers to receive, rebates for using particular railroads. Railroads could not change set rates without notifying the public

Hepburn Act- 1906- Limited the distribution of free railroad passes, ICC power to set maximum railroad rates, Boosted the governments power to regulate railroads

Regulating Foods and Drugs- Meat inspection act- Roosevelt, Compromise won, Government-Paying, Canned Goods

Pure Food and Drug Act- Dr.Harvey Washington Wiley- Chief Chemist- Department of Agriculture, Criticized Manufacturers- Harmful preservatives, Pure food and drug act-1906, halted, contaminated foods and medicine, Truth, labeling

Thursday- We chose new forum post leaders and we continued presenting our projects on Chapter 9

Chapter 9, Section 3-

Conservation and Natural Resources-Late 19th century, Pioneer farmers- forests and prairies, Cattle- overgraze, Lumber companies- Neglected to plant, Cities- sewage-dumped, wastes-rivers

Square deal- Formed upon three basic ideas-Conservation of natural resources, control of corporations, consumer protection, Three C's, Help middle class citizens, attacked wealth and bad trusts, protect businesses- extreme demands of organized labor, Not to favor any group of Americans- be fair to all

Teddy Roosevelt-Failed to support- African Americans, Few individuals, Booker t. Washington- Tuskegee normal, industrial institute- training school

W.E.B Du Bois- Civil rights conference-1905- Niagara falls, 1909- joined with white reformers

NAACP- National association of colored people, 6,00-1914, full equality, little support in progressive movement , progressive movement- needs of middle class, presidents to follow did little to advance- William Taft, Woodrow Wilson

Chapter 9, Section 4-

Taft's Presidency- 1904, republican, Roosevelt pledged not to run again for reelection in 1908, He hand picked Taft, Had an easy victory over Bryan

Taft Stumbles- He received little credit, not a popular president like Roosevelt, Didn't do what Roosevelt wanted him to do, Broke up a lot of Monopolies

Payne- Aldrich Tariff- Lowered rates on manufactured goods when the Payne bill passed

October 12th-16th

Monday: We worked on our Family History projects if we had one and we worked on chapter 9 presentations.

Tuesday: We kept on talking about chapters 7-9

Wednesday: We watched some videos on Ellis Island and Angels Island which have to do with Immigration.

Thursday: We got groups if we aren't doing a family history project and continued talking about Angel and Ellis Island.

Labor Unions Emerge- Blacks/Whites, males/females/ and unskilled/skilled coming together to make unions so that they could improve their conditions

September 21-25

Monday: Christina from the nature center came and she showed us what the buffalo where used for after the native Americans killed them

Tuesday: We continued presenting our projects

Natural Resources Fuel Industrialization- Due to several factors, including: a wealth of natural resources, government support for business, and a growing urban population that provide bot cheap labor and markets for new products.

Black Gold- Native American tribes made fuel medicine, Successfully used a steam engine to drill oil near Titusville, Pennsylvania, Started an oil boom that spread to Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, and later Texas

Electricity- Thomas Edison- electricity system/light bulb, Light-Bulb patented in 1880:only burned for 40 hours at first: Edison found carbonized bamboo filament

Workers Standard of Living- Industrialization freed workers from back breaking labor, 1890:Work week reduced by 10 hours

Market- Expanded urban population created a big potential market

Railroads-By the start of the civil war the had over 30,000 miles of tracks, Union Pacific and Central Pacific, 

Thursday: We finished up presenting projects and we got new forum post leaders.

Typewriter- Christopher Sholes, affected more office work and created more jobs for women

Telephone- Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Watson, freed the workers from difficult physical labor.

Steel: Great amount of coal &iron, iron is dense metal, soft, tends to break &rust, Contains Carbon, Used to update bridges, farm machines, barbed wire, and railroads.

Darwinism- Charles Darwin- Theory of evolution

Few people Controlling more- Other people had no chance unless you where rich, Carnegie: Steel, Rockefeller: Oil

Growth and Consolidation- Companies merged with other or were bought out, and became more industrialized, Oil;cheap labor, more centralized.
