What is happening with malls?

Malls have been a popular hang out place among teens since the 1960's.  That was only four years after Victor Gruen made a model of what a mall would look like and had the first one built. By 1975 shopping malls contributed to 33% of retail businesses' money. By 1992 malls were at their peak of popularity and the malls were contributing to over half of the money retail businesses were making. So when did it all go wrong? Because, malls are starting to shut down because businesses/retailers are not getting the money they need to keep the doors open. It all started to become less popular in 2008 when online shopping websites started to get more popular. So when people started to shop online the businesses inside the malls don't have money the mall tends to try to find other businesses to move in. Since a lot of businesses are switching to online or just going bankrupt the malls do not have the money to keep their doors open. But why is that? It could be the fact that when everyone was in lock down for covid 19 and businesses were making more money online, or it could be that the businesses were drowning in debt trying to keep there doors open.  A lot of businesses switched to online during covid in the hope they might make more money because they don't have to pay the mall to be there and because businesses were on lock down.

What do you think would help malls to get more people to shop there?

When was the last time you went to a mall?

Do you think malls should stay open and why?

  • I feel malls would be more popular if there wasnt so many of them. Today there are so many of them and people get so bored of them and just go to stores instead of malls. The last time i went to the mall was a couple weeks ago. I do still think they should stay open unless they have no buissness.

  • Malls used to be the things through the 2000's, until the cool clothes shops in the malls came out on phone and you could shop from your phone. I go to the outdoor mall in ohmah about once a month or every other month, they seem like they are the only mall thats busy no matter what.

  • I think if malls drop their prices a little bit they would get more people to shop there. I think malls should stay opened because that way people don't have to waste much gas driving to a big store to get the things they want and need.

  • I haven't been to a mall in a long time and personally I don't really like malls but I also don't like shopping in general. I think malls are starting to decrease in popularity due to the major uprising of online shopping so you don't have to go anywhere to get what you need. But the only way I can think that malls could bring in more people is buy making it more entertaining and easier to shop somehow.

  • Last time I went to a mall was probably a month ago. We go maybe every other month mainly because we have family in the city so we have to go there anyways. I think online shopping and how popular its gotten is the big reason. Also because a lot of people dont really like the mall much because it can be annoying having to walk around for a long period of time.

  • The last time I went to a mall was around 2 months ago. I think malls would attract more people if they try to be more entertaining. I think that malls pretty soon are going to be closed down because people now shop online because it is easier.

  • I personally do not go to malls, I think they are boring and I would rather shop online and just have it shipped to me. People don't go to malls anymore, because you can just order things, and I think a lot of malls are going to start closing down.

  • They could make them a little bit cooler and more interesting, also a lot of the reason no ones going to malls anymore is because you can just shop online now. The last time I went to a mall was like two days ago. I think malls should stay open because they make it easy to go shopping at a lot of different stores without having to drive around everywhere. I would be able to understand why they would close down if they did.

  • The last time I went to a mall was probably 5 years ago. Malls are now irrelevent due to online shopping and I don't think there is much we can do to help them get customers. I think in the near future, malls will be extinct.

  • I think all of the malls are running out of business because of the internet and websites like Amazon.  There is less demand to go to malls because people can get everything they want online instead of having to go somewhere to get all of their needed supplies.
