What Happened to D.B. Cooper?

On November 24, 1971, a man named Dan (D.B.) Cooper was on a flight and handed the stewardess a note saying he had a bomb in his briefcase and he wanted her to sit with him on the flight. The stewardess sat down next to him and Cooper slightly opened his suitcase, allowing her to get a glimpse of a bunch of wires and dynamite inside of his briefcase. He had her write a note to the captain demanding 4 parachutes and $200,000 in twenty-dollar bills. The flight landed in Seattle and Cooper exchanged the passengers for the money and parachutes, but he kept some crew members and started a flight to Mexico City. However, in between Seattle and Reno, Cooper jumped out of the back of the plane with a parachute and the $200,000, never to be found.

There are many conspiracies around what happened to Cooper after he jumped. One is that he died in the jump because he couldn't control where he was landing with the parachute, his clothing (a suit) was not fit for landing, and he jumped into a heavily wooded area at night. However, his body, a parachute, clothing, or anything else related to his theft was never found except $5,800 of Cooper's ransom money in 1980 along the Columbia River.

A second theory is that he survived the jump and simply just lived out the rest of his life normally, except under a different name. For example, a man named Duane Weber told his wife on his deathbed that he is D.B. Cooper. There is a lot of evidence that suggests that this man may be D.B. Cooper, such as the similarities in their looks, how he'd consistently sleep-talk about leaving fingerprints on a plane, his criminal background associated with the case, and more.

While there are many theories on who D.B. Cooper may be, considering numerous people have claimed to be D.B. Cooper or know his whereabouts, none have had enough evidence to pinpoint who he actually is. I personally believe that D.B. Cooper survived the plane crash but I don't think any of the people who claimed to be him were actually him.

Do you think D.B. Cooper survived the jump?

Do you think D.B. Cooper ever revealed his identity?

If so, do you think he was Duane Weber?

  • Very interesting topic and one I was not familiar with. Your summary is well done and you did a good job replying back to students. Be sure to comment back on three different days.

  • I think that cooper did not survive because I think they would have found him if he was still alive and there are many things that could have happened such as he landed but couldn't find a road before he died of starvation or the parachute simply could have failed to open.

    • I think that it is possible he didn't survive and his body has just not been found, considering he hasn't been found alive in the last 50 years.

  • I think that he probable had lived but there's also a part of me that thinks it would be very hard for him to have erased his identity completely. With medical assistance needed after his jump, I feel that he would need some sort of urget assesment that would be difficult to obtain while trying to change identities.

    • I agree, I think he lived but it would be very difficult for him not to be recognized especially if he was injured after his jump.

  • I feel like he survived his jump and started living a new life with a new name and everything. I don't think he would ever reveal his identity though, I doubt he'd do that because he could get caught and sent to jail. I don't think he was Duane Weber.

    • I agree, I think he survived and changed his identity and I also don't think he would reveal his identity because of the possible consequences.

  • My guess is that D.B. Cooper is either alive or his body landed in some body of water and sunk. I'm leaning towards he is lived, and probably took the risk to share his identity with a couple trusted people. After pulling off such a sceme it would be hard to keep it completly to yourself.

    • I agree, I think it would be very difficult to keep such a crazy thing a secret, especially for a long period of time.

  • There is a possibilty that D.B. Cooper survived the jump, he could've planned to keep his life as a "secret" after that. I do not think he will ever reveal his true identity, if he does, the world's going crazy. Although yes, I do think he could be Duane Weber.
