What belongs at the top of the tree?

A tree topper is the large ornament placed on the very top of a Christmas tree. No one knows exactly where they originated, but their first on record use was in Germany in the 1600s back when baby Jesus tree toppers covered family trees covered with gold glitter, gingerbread and apples.

As time has gone on, angel toppers had become the most popular In England during the 17th century. It makes sense since angles play a large part in the Christmas nativity story and have many Christmas carols to back it up like  “Hark the Hearld Angels Sing ''. However the angle on top of the tree to most people represents the heavenly messengers who announced the birth of Jesus Christ.

As more and more years have gone by, star tree toppers have gained popularity. Many people today purchase all different shapes, sizes, and colors of these christmas star toppers to place on top of the family tree representing the very well known star of Bethlaham.

Years and years later Christmas tree toppers are still used in many households that choose to celebrate the season of Christmas. However, today there are more creative tree toppers that have expanded beyond just stars and angles placed at the top of the tree. Unique ideas of these christmas tree toppers keep getting better and better each year consisting of snowman, elfs, candy canes, and even santa.

In my opinion I think that both the star and the angel on top of the tree are equally as special. My family places an angel on one of our trees and a star on the other during the holidays.

  • What do you place on top of your tree?
  • Do you prefer a star or an angle?
  • Do you place something other than an angel or star on your tree?

  • My family puts a star on our tree, but other people in my family put an angel, like my grandparents. Personally, it does not bother me for which and angel or a star is on top of the tree, they both look great and hold a great meaning, it's just what my family has always done.

    • I agree both topers look great and have a strong meaning behind them I dont think there is a wrong choice.

  • I put a star on the top of my tree because it looks better than an angel. I prefer a star because we have one where the lights make it look like a tunnel inside the star. We used to put a giant top hat on our tree until our dog got ahold of it and destroyed it.

    • Wow that sounds like a cool star ive never heard of one that has looked like that before but I imagine it looks great on top of your tree.

  • Me and my family often use a star for a topper on or tree. Its always a lot of fun to decorate and put the topper on with my family. I would really hate not getting to spend the time I do with my family around Christmas.

    • Christmas is very special time of the year to many and decorating the tree is always so fun to do and very sentimental.

  • In my family, we have always put either a star or an angel on the top of the tree. I think that a star can sometimes look nicer, but angels sometimes can have a different meaning, and it relates more to Christmas.

    • I agree I think they both relate to the season of Christmas and are both very special.

  • My family doesnt put anything at the top of our tree, If we were to put somthing on the top of our tree I would prefer a angle over a star.

  • My family has always had a angel topper and I personally prefer it, I don't remember ever using a star topper. But this year we went with something different and chose a top hat to put on our tree.
