Two Iowa Police Officers Killed

Des Moines officers Susan Farrell and Carlos Puente-Morales were two of the four people killed in a car crash last Saturday. The car accident was caused by a driver going the wrong way on the freeway. At the time, the officers were transporting a prisoner from council bluffs back to Des Moines. This is the first time since 2007 that a police officer from Des Moines has died in a car accident. All of the victims were wearing seat belts.

Do you think the driver of the car going the wrong way was under the influence of some kind? Why or why not?

Do you think some cities need to invest in better trafficking signs? Explain.

What are your overall thoughts?

I think this is a terrible story. There hasn't been much luck for police officers lately. I don't think the officer was under the influence, but I do think they didn't know how to read road signs. I have been in big cities where it is confusing to find the right road and some signs don't make sense.

  • Good job Claire!

  • I think the driver was under some kine of influence because normal people don't drive down the wrong side of the street. No because it is pretty obvious which way to drive and spending more money would just be a waste of money. That drive was an idiot for doing that and was probably under influence of drugs or alcohol.

  • I do because their is no way you can get onto the interstate on the wrong side without being drunk. I don't think it was the traffic signs, but more the drunk guys fault. I watched the news and it turns out that the guy that crashed into the police has been arrested and has had his license suspended before for drunk driving. My overall thought is that this is a tragedy and that people need to realize that drinking and driving may seem harmless, but it can ruin and, in cases like this, end lives.

    • I agree with you because drunk driving is dangerous and should not happen.

  • This is just such a terrible accident.  I wouldn't know if the driver was under the influence, there is a possibility that they were, but maybe they just made a tragic mistake.  I think that there are plenty of signs to direct the driver when getting on and off of the interstate.

  • I think that the driver was under some influence. I don't think that a person would put their life in that much danger for no reason. I don't really know how much the new traffic signs would do... I mean most people are able to see what way the cars are going and use some common sense. Also there are already lots of signs. I feel bad for all of them and their families!

  • I think the driver had to be under the influence. How would this person be driving down the interstate and not know that they were going the wrong way as cars were obviously coming towards him at high speed. I think the trafficking signs are fine, this definitely was not because somebody could not read a sign, even if you didn't read the sign, if you had some common sense you would know that you are driving on the wrong side of the median.

    • I agree with you because if you don't have common sense then you obviously shouldn't be driving.

  • The driver of the car had to have been doing something wrong because it's almost impossible to go the wrong way down the interstate. Maybe since it was dark he couldn't tell, but it still sounds like he was under the influence. I think it's scary because I was in Des Moines and on the interstate that night and you just never know when something like this could happen.

    • I agree with you because it was dark out and the driver probably couldn't see where he was going.
