Two Firefighters Shoot Shoot walks free

Two Maryland firefighter were shoot trying to force entry on a house. After the shooters brother called 911 expressed concern about his brother.  When they tried to force entry several shots were fired through the door. It would the shooters brother and firefight John Ulmschneider 39 was killed. He was married and had a 2 year old daughter. Kevin Swain 19 a volunteer firefighter got shot 4 times and is in serious condition. The shooter was released from custody.

What do you think the punishment should be for the shooter?

How would you react if you were Ulmschneiders family?

What do you think was going though that guy's head?

I think that guy needs to be charge with murder and should get the rest of his life in prison for killing a firefighter. I would be mad because that wasn't charged and sad that I lost someone I cared about.  I don't know what would make a person just go shooting his gun at firefighter. He has to have some type of mental problem.

  • Again, fine summary but be sure to reply more.

  • I think that the shooter should be charged with murder. There is always the risk of getting involved in these kinds of situations when working with law enforcement. I think that anyone would be upset if their loved one was shot and killed and then the shooter was never charged with murder.

    • I agree that he should be charged with murder and that the family is upset about the shooter not being charged.

  • I think the shooter should definitely be charged and probably spend some jail tome. I think it was possibly going through the guys head that he didn't really know who was trying to force into their house maybe??

  • As the Victim, i would be very surprised and sort of upset. As for the shooters. Why would they get to walk free? But it doesn't make any sense.

  • Considering that's probably either first or second degree murder (the story doesn't tell if it was premeditated,) I would think it would be prison time.

If I was part of that family, I'd be crushed. If my husband or father was killed just by doing his job, I'd be outraged and upset.

I think he was trying to protect his own house and didn't want people entering, maybe because he had an illegal operation or something of the sort going on inside. It's insane that he had to resort to shooting them, but that's what he did.

  • I think the guy should get life in prison as well, and I wonder why the police weren't there to break down the door, perhaps the firefighters had the only equipment. It seems really weird that the firefighters didn't know that the man inside had a gun. The man in the house obviously was insane or on drugs or something.

  • This should be charged as murder, so more than likely life in prison. A situation like this would be hard to understand why people do things like this. I don't know how I would react if I was a member of this family. I would be very shocked, of course, and terrified.

  • For the victim, I bet that he couldn't believe what happened in that moment. As for the shooters, I don't think they should have walked free because it doesn't make sense!

  • I would be horrified. If this were my child that was the murderer or the parents of the victims, I would be absolutely horrified! I cannot believe how a person could do this to another person!
