The Willow Project is an 8 billion dollar project that will go through a significant part of Alaska. It has been in the works for a while now, but it has been extremely controversial.

"Today, the Interior Department issued a Record of Decision regarding the proposed Willow Master Development Plan in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (NPR-A). The Department is substantially reducing the size of the project by denying two of the five drill sites proposed by ConocoPhillips, which is seeking to develop oil and gas leases it acquired beginning in the late 1990s. The company will also relinquish rights to approximately 68,000 acres of its existing leases in the NPR-A, including approximately 60,000 acres in the Teshekpuk Lake Special Area," (

Environment activists are concerned with the wildlife and ecosystems in the area. The project will pump 278-287 billion metric tons of carbon into the atmosphere over a 30-year time period. The pipelines will affect many of the animals in the area and cause the rates of respiratory illnesses in the Native American community to go up.

"The project includes approximately 11 miles of roads, 20 miles of pipelines, and 133 acres of gravel, all of which reduces potential impacts to caribou migration and subsistence users. The actions will create an additional buffer from exploration and development activities near the calving grounds and migratory routes for the Teshekpuk Lake caribou herd, an important subsistence resource for nearby Alaska Native communities. They significantly scale-back the Willow Project within the constraints of valid existing rights under decades-old leases issued by prior Administrations," (

It will help give our country more natural resources. It will help us by having American based drilled and mined resourced, making us not have to get imported goods for our cars and other fuel ran vehicles.

In my opinion, I think that this will hurt the people in the area tremendously. I understand why the native people in the area are upset. I feel like it will also have a negative effect on our planet. I don't think hurting animals and their ecosystems is worth the oil and coal we will get. All drilling is harmful and this project is no different.

What is your opinion?

Do you think it should or shouldn't of been passed?

How do you feel about climate change?

  • Great topic choice and well done Emily!! +5

  • I am not sure what it would do because no on ecan know what will happen until it has happened but the people who determine if it will or will not happen have to look at both sides and determine if the pros outweigh the cons. I know that it can be in a way scary to think about the animals and stuff but it coul dbe worth it to help out country but it also doesn't help because there will be less animals so I am not sure what to think about this.

  • I think it will keep going regardless of what we think. There are probably some ways we can help the "green-ness" or sustainability of the project. However, I do not think we will stop it. I personally think that it should continue because it will help with International trading. Also, did someone say oil??????

  • I feel that the Willow Project shouldn't of be passed, it will damage the wildlife in Alaska. It will also cause climate change to get even worse in the world. I feel that we already have an issue with climate change why should we make it worse? Though lots of people don't belive in climate change its very much real.

  • I don't think that the willow project should have been passed. It will have such a big impact on the environment that we can't afford. The nature and animals in Alaska will be very much impacted as well. We should invest more money and resources into finding ways to live more sustainable.

    • I agree, finding ways to be more sustainable would be beneficial. Innocent animals will die and humans will be affected in awful ways. I feel like the Willow Project should not have been passed. There are more sustainable ways to make fuel, like PtG, which makes renewable fuel using solar and wind power.

  • I don't think this should have been passed at all. It is horribly cruel and unfair to the animals and the environment. It's also unfair to the future generations because they won't be able to experience these animals and how the world is now.

    • I agree, this is very horrible and cruel. The animals are going to get their environment completely messed up. The Native people in the area are going to be negatively affected. I feel like it shouldn't have been passed and it is very stupid that it was. It is cruel and shows that the people truly don't care about animals, people, or our planet.

  • I think that the Willow Project is not a very good idea if it is going to put innocent animals in danger and possibly ruin people's homes in Alaska. I think that it should not be passed because it will hurt the ecosystems of the animals in the area. As you said drilling is very harmful to the environment and it's not worth it to hurt animals and their ecosystems just for oil and coal or any other resource that we drill for. I think that climate change is real and it is a very big problem that needs to be noticed and paid attention to more often. It can be because of multiple things and drilling is one of the biggest problems that cause it to happen.

    • I agree with you. I feel like politicians are not paying attention to climate change enough. I feel like drilling is very harmful to our environment. It isn't worth it when there are other ways to make fuel, that don't harm our environment as badly. I feel bad for the animals and people that live in the area, their lives are going to be destroyed.
