The History of Snowboarding

The History of Snowboarding

As we know, skiing and snowboarding are very popular in areas that have mountains and receive good amounts of snow. However, snowboarding has a very interesting background and it’s very cool to see the improvement in the history of snowboarding. The idea of snowboarding came from a surfer and started out different from what  snowboards are today.

The first snowboard came from a surfer named Sherman Poppen. In the 1960’s, he made a board called the snurfer. This board was made of wood and it had a rope on the nose of the board in which you would pull and hold on to. As it became more popular, it was tough because ski resorts wouldn’t allow these new boards on their mountains. People had to wait till mountains closed and then hike up them to snowboard.

Then eventually in the late 70’s, a 23 year old student named Jake Burton had the idea to add footstraps to the board which changed the experience of snowboarding. In the late 80’s and early 90’s, snowboarding started to become a sport competition and the snurfer board declined. At this time, people had invented the first ever high-back bindings. This made snowboarders feel much more stable and comfortable on their board.

In the mid 1990’s, snowboarding became the fastest growing winter sport on the planet. Ski resorts flourished and snowboarders were allowed on mountains. These days, around 7.56 million people snowboard. Now there are different shapes of snowboards, there are step on bindings, and the technology continues to improve.

Have you ever gone snowboarding/skiing?

What do you think about snowboarding?

In the 70’s, would it be worth it to hike part of the mountain and board down?

  • Great topic choice and well done!  Be sure to comment three different days next time.

  • I've never been snowboarding, but it has always been something I've wanted to do. The idea seems fun to me, and I hope I can get a chance to do it sometime soon. Hiking up the mountain every time would be exhausting, but I think it would be worth the effort and good exercise.

  • I've never gone snowboarding or skiing before but sometime I would like to do it. I think snowboarding looks fun to do maybe some work at it to be good at doing it.  I think it would be time consuming to go up the mountain to hike, it's definitely worth it if you snowboard down.

  • I have never gone skiing or snowboarding before I would try it if given the chance to, I think it looks pretty fun but i would defenlty fall a few times and would take a lot of practice. I dont think hiking back up would be worth it but it would be fun to go down.

  • I have never been snowboarding or skiing before. I think that they both look pretty fun to do but would require some skill in both. I think that hiking back up the mountain would be worth even though it would probably be exhausting it would be really fun to go back down.

  • I have not gone skiing or snowborading, but I think it is a fun activity, people look happy when they practice it, even though I'm a little afraid of that type of activity, I think I would try it sometime.

  • My family and I try to go to Keystone, Colorado once a year. We all ski, so none of us have snowboarded before. In my opinion, snowboarding looks harder than skiing because you only have one thing to balance on. Also, I don't think it would be worth it to hike up the whole mountain, I'd much rather use the ski lift.

  • I have been snowboarding before and recently went skiing for the first time. Snowboarding is challenging but looks so impressive and fun if you can get the hang of it. I found sking a lot easier then snowboarding so I would just ski instead of hiking up a mountain to snowboard.

  • I have be on a snowboarding in just a back yard. But I do not think that is quite equivelent to snowboarding/skiing out in the mountains or what it is like to compete in the compitishons.  Snow boarding / skiing I think is quite interesting for what I see on Tiktok or tv and how they move. But personly I am not gona walk up the mountains like they use to.

  • I have not gone snowboarding/skiing. I think snowboarding looks super fun. I also think that snowboarding is something that takes skill. I think hiking up a hill to board down would be worth it because it would be an amazing feeling going down the hill.
