Deyshia Hargrave was outraged when the schools superintendent was getting a raise and made sure the school board knew it. At a school board meeting, Hargrave spoke up, saying, "You're making our job even more difficult... A superintendent or any person in a position of leadership getting any type of raise, I feel like it's a slap in the face to all the teachers, cafeteria workers, and any other support staff we have." As Hargrave continued to share her concerns, a city marshal hired by the school district escorted her out of the meeting room, before handcuffing her in the hallway and escorting her out of the building and to the Abbeville, Louisiana jail. She was released on bond soon after, but is considering legal action, exclaiming that she feels her right to free speech was violated. Another school board member, Laura LeBeouf, was upset by Hargraves arrest and commented after Hargrave had been taken away, "What happened here tonight -- the way that females are treated in Vermilion Parish ... I have never seen a man removed from this room." Both the Superintendent and the marshal were both men, and people are outraged by the whole story.

Do you think Deyshia Hargrave should press charges for her arrest?

I believe that Hargrave should press charges. Hargrave was only expressing her disagreement with the school board. She was never violent, or committed any crimes what so ever. Hargrave had the freedom to speak out, and yet she was still arrested for it, which is absolutely unacceptable.

What would you have done if you were a supervising teacher during this arrest?

Like LeBeouf, I would speak out. I feel like Hargraves freedom of speech was violated, But I don't think I would go as far as to call the arrest sexist. I don't know if woman are treated poorly in Vermilion Parish or if LeBeouf is exagerating.

  • Good job overall but be sure to comment more frequently next time.

  • I believe that she should press charges for being arrested. I think that it was most certainly a violation of her rights. She had the right to say what she was feeling and she shouldn't have been arrested. In fact what was she even arrested for? I wouldn't have had her arrested in the first place I would have let her talk and try to work something out between everyone.

  • Yes, She was just expressing her distates for the sitution so I feel it is unjust.

Spoke out against mistreatment of my coworker.

  • Yes she should because she was arrested for no reason if anything it violates her freedom of speech. I have no idea becuase i would be in shock that they arrested her for speaking out.

  • I think that she never said anything terrible or threatened anybody so there was no reason for her arrest so she should press charges. I would have no idea what to do because you can't interfere with the police.

  • I don't think it's necessary for Deyshia to press charges for her arrest. She expressed her thoughts in a kind of forceful way, it would have been much better to do it in a more quietly manner. I personally would just kind of stand back, I think by arresting her they were just trying to keep her under control.

  • I believe she could make a case and she could press charges. I believe she should press charges because he rights were violated. I would not say that the incident is sexist. I think that they just made a judgment call even if it was wrong.

  • Honestly, I think she should. There was no reason for her to be arrested, as she was just stating her opinions at the school board meeting. Freedom of speech IS legal in our country, and I think all she was doing was expressing it.

I would try to say something. What just happened wasn't fair, and I agree with Hargrave so I might as well say what I feel as well.

  • 1. People think it weird that I don't think you should sue another person for their wrong doings but thats just my opinion. I think that her right of speech was most definiately violated, but I do think because she is a teacher she should have handled it better. If I was a supervising teacher I wouldn't have gotten involved. That is someone elses affair and thats their business.

  • I think she should press charges because she was just saying how she felt. No crimes were committed and she has the freedom to speak out. If I was a teacher, I would'v spoke up because she was just saying how she disagreed with the school board.
