Stomach Bug Hits Many On a British Cruise Ship

More than 200 people have fallen sick on a British Cruise ship with gastrointestinal condition norovirus. The CDC has reported that 252 our of 919 passengers have gotten sick. Also 8 of 520 crew members have gotten sick. CDC employees conducted an environmental health assessment when the ship arrived in Baltimore on April 30th. They reported that there was specimens of norovirus.  The cruise has increased their disinfection procedures, collected stool specimens from passengers, and has sanitized the ship. On April 29, they put out a press release informing that a gastro-enteritis illness has affected many people from the cruise. The ship stopped in Portland and was the first this year to visit it.

Question:

1. What do you think caused this illness?

2. Do you think their number of passengers will decrees in future years because of this?

  • Some type of disease caused this to happen. Could just be their location. The numbers might go down slightly but not dramatically. It is hard to control this when you are on a cruise ship.

  • Some kind of disease caused it, i may have been something in the air or the water or the food that got that many people infected. It might go down a little bit, but unless this cruise has a history of problems, I think people will realize that stuff just happens sometimes and that they will learn from it.

    • Ya, I agree with you that it really could have been anything that caused this outbreak. That's a good point that people do need to realize that things happen that just can't prevented, but you shouldn't have to stop doing fun things because your afraid of a chance something could go wrong.

  • I think the illness could of been caused by a sick person or just poor cleaning on the ship. And I think the number of passengers will definetely decrease after something like that because people wouldn't want to get sick

    • I also agree with you that someone could have been sick and brought the virus and it just spread throughout the cruise.

  • I think someone was sick before and then went to the ship. This person spread the virus and now a lor of people is sick. I think it would decrease because a lot of people are afraid of this virus.

  • Someone might have brought the illness aboard the ship and spread it to other people. I wouldn't think so. People still do stuff in places where there have been way more accidents.

  • There can be many reasons why this virus can spread. I have done some research and this virus can spread by food or water, touching contaminated surfaces, or from an infected person.

    • That's interesting maybe it was started on the cruise instead of being brought onto the cruise.
