Spring Valley High School Officer Suspended

In a school in South Carolina a school cop violently arrested a student. The officer stood over the student's desk and put his arm near her neck just moments before yanking her backwards. After yanking her backwards the student's desk tipped over and the student fell to the ground. The officer drug the student to the front of the classroom without letting go. Deputy Ben Fields has been suspended, without pay, since Monday. The deputies boss has to make a decision in the next 24 hours whether or not the officer gets his job back.

My Opinion- I think this is absolutely horrible. The student was not physically hurting anybody in the classroom and no student should be treated like this in front of their classmates.

Here is the Link to the full story, including the video.

Questions:

1. How long do you think the officer should be suspended?

2. Do you think the officer should get his job back at this school?

3. If you watched the video, do you think the cop treated the student right, or did he take it too far?

  • Great job once again!

  • Other articles online say that other events happened before what happened on the video, and until they figure that out, the officer should be suspended. I agree that the cop took it too far, but we aren't sure what happened beforehand. Once there is a clear explanation on what happened, they should make the final decision of he should keep his job or not.

    • There probably are occasions that did happen before that we do not know about, but I really think this cop acted way to physically towards the student.

  • I think the officer should be suspended as long as the investigation takes place. If the girl was at fault too, he should get his job back. I think it was way too far. There was no need for that violence. There are many other ways to get the girl to leave the classroom.

    • Agreed that the officer should definitely be suspended until the case is closed and then in my opinion, be fired.

  • I think the officer should be suspended.. If I were him I would quit and look for a new job. If the Student did hit the officer before, I could see him having a reason to be a bit more violent, but I think he took it too far.

  • I definitely think that his officer should be fired, because I think it's unacceptable for a high school student to be physically harmed in this way and this incident just further creates a lot of distrust that has been building towards the police force in past months. I have been following this story in the news and the only thing the student did wrong is that she had her cell phone out during class and when the officer told her to leave the room she refused. For something so minor and insignificant, I think for the officer to flip her desk and drag her across the room is ridiculous and was the wrong way to handle the situation. Some people say the officer's actions were justified because the teenager wasn't following orders to leave the class room, but I feel the officer could have gone about that in a non-physical way without flinging the student across the room.

    • I definitely agree that the police officer did not have to act so forcefully, he could have done it in a very less-physical way.

  • I think he should've been arrested the moment the principal heard about what happened. The cop definitely overreacted and the situation could have been handled in a much better way. Did you know that he's been sued for excessive force before? Knowing that I think the man shouldn't have been employed in the first place.

    • I actually did not know that but I think this just signifies that he really shouldn't be allowed to go back to work.
