Red Flags Missed in Newtown Shooting

Almost two years ago, on December 14, 2012, 20-year old Adam Lanza went on a gruesome killing spree in Sandy Hook Elementary School, killing 20 students, 6 educators, his mother and eventually himself. On Friday, a report was released from the Connecticut office of the child advocate. The 114 page report stated that Lanza's mother, school districts and doctors missed plenty "warning signs". Throughout his childhood, Adam always displayed abnormal mental behavior. Lanza never enjoyed being kissed or hugged and always kept to himself. While in school, he wrote a story called "the big book of of Granny" which included pictures and words about child murder and cannibalism. As Lanza got older, he spent more and more time in his room, and never would contact anyone, except his mother over email. Days before the shooting, he hadn't left he room for three months and had become anorexic. The authors of this report have concluded that Lanza was "obviously psychotic" and was on the road to violence.

Do you think adam's mother, school district or doctors should take partial blame for his violence and for missing the warning signs?? Why?

  • Good job!!

  • I think that they definitely should have suspected something, but it's easier said than done. So many people are depressed and stay in their room's these days so it's harder to tell who is psychotic and who is just depressed.

    • Lanza stayed in his room for three months. Wouldn't you at least suspect something?

  • Yes, I do think that they should take partial blame. The shooting was very bad, and very many people got hurt. They could at least did something to help stop him.

    • Who do you think could of helped the most?

  • No, they wasn't a lot you could do about that. But maybe they shouldv'e been more serious and concerned about his "warnings". I don' think they should take blame for this situation.

    • What about him staying in his room for 3 months? Wouldn't

his mother ever try to get him help?

  • I say yes, because if a person acts that way, the you know there is something wrong with them, so you should take precautions to make sure that they are under surveillance.

  • Not so much the school district and doctors, but it was definitely his mother's fault. How do you not have contact with your son for three months? Something should have been done way before this could have happened.

    • The doctors would be able to detect any mental illnesses, that this man most like likely had. Do you think that would change the situation?
