Mines vs. Monarchs

Tens of millions of monarch butterflies are facing danger, as one of Mexico's largest corporations is near winning government approval in re-opening a sprawling mine in Angangueo, right next to the most important winter habitat of monarchs. In a region where butterfly tourism isn’t doing much to ease pervasive poverty, the mining proposal has plenty of local support, even as it alarms biologists. very few people are aware that Mexico’s largest mining conglomerate, Grupo México, wants to use a loophole to 'revive' mining in the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, a protected region where most industrial activity should be banned. Mexican environmental authorities, along with a global conservation group that has an active program in the reserve, have said almost nothing about the proposal, which local scientists say "poses a clear threat to the beleaguered butterflies".

People are left with few options: Provide jobs for the suffering people of Angangueo, or save these butterflies?

If you were had to make the final decision, what would you choose and why?

Who and what would your decision benefit?

  • Well done!

  • My decision would benefit the environment and the butterflies. Building this sprawling mine would take away a huge part of nature in mexico

  • I would save the butterflies because that was there territory before ours so just let it be

I think benefits are where you earn something for doing something

    • I agree. Though it might provide a lot of jobs, I think they could possibly move the location. Butterflies haven't done any harm to the people of this area, and it would be unfair for us to destroy their home.

  • Probably mine because these are just butterflies I mean yes there pretty and everything but I mean those butterflies will die before I do. I would stand up and say something because it's not right to go and take someones life if they don't want to. I think they should just move them to a different place or something if they want to save them.

    • That is true- it would provide a lot of jobs for the people struggling in this area. Maybe they could move it to a different place, just like you said

    • I agree. They haven't done any harm and it would reduce the majority of their population.

  • I would definitely choose to protect the butterflies. I think that animals are extremely important and diverse creatures, and the world wouldn't be the same without them. I know that jobs are important and these people are in a crisis, but I still think that the long-term affects of destroying a butterfly habitat are far worse than not providing jobs to people. I think that jobs could be found or made in other places. My decision to do this would benefit the butterflies and, in turn, the environment.

  • I think saving the butterflies is a better option. Honestly, there is a lot more ways people can get jobs. My decision would benefit the butterflies because why would we hurt something when there is more options than this corporation. Why would we extinct these butterflies when they aren't causing any harm?

    • I think that saving the butterflies would be the better option as well, but if this mine opens, it would help out a large number of struggling people, which is why this is debated about.
