Last Flight...

An Arizona skydiving student has died during a jump. The student and her instructor were performing a tandem jump when something malfunctioned and they both hit the ground. The student was pronounced dead when firefighters arrived and the instructor is in the hospital with both legs broken. The company that runs the program said, "Her reserve parachute deployed and worked properly, but something like a dust devil threw her into the ground at the last second." This was her 2nd time skydiving.

What would you do if you were the instructor and this happened?

How do you think the family will react towards the company?

I know that if I was the instructor and I saw her struggling, I would have tried to get her to hold onto me and use the same parachute. I'm not aware of how the mechanics of the parachute work, but you might be able to do so. And If I were the family, I would for sure be mad at the company, but if her reserve parachute worked, there isn't anything you can do if a dust devil ruined everything.

  • Good but all of your replies were done today.

  • If I was her instructor I would be heartbroken. I would wish that I would've done something more to help her and I'm not sure I could live with the fact I didn't teach her well enough. I'm sure the family is outraged at the company, but it was nothing the company could help. It was just a freak accident and it was nobody's fault.

    • I agree that it was a freak accident. Things like this happen and sometimes we just can't help it.

  • I would never go skydiving and for this reason only. There are so many things that could go wrong while skydiving and unfortunately, these two had to experience it. I'm sure this man will never want to go skydiving again, and if he does, I'm sure he won't have a job at that place anymore.

    • I agree with you Jenny. I'm not sure if I would go skydiving or not. It would be cool to feel the adrenaline but then also I don't know if I would risk my life like that.

  • I would feel terrible if I was the instructor obviously, and would wonder why the reserve parachute still couldn't save the student from the dust devil. I hope the family realizes that this was truly an accident and doesn't sue the company. The company might have made the student sign a wavier that says there is the possibility of death while skydiving.

    • The company probably did have the student sign a paper stating that they might die...The dust devil is an interesting part to the story.

  • If I was the instructor, I would have tried everything to prevent this from happening. However, I know that in the moment, you aren't thinking rationally. If this happened, I would feel terrible and totally to blame! I think that I would feel guilty in a way. I think the family will  be extremely upset at first, but I think (and hope) that they will come to the conclusion that accidents happen. Hopefully they are able to get through this difficult time!

    • Yes, hopefully the family will be able to have some closure. I don't think they can do much to the company.

  • This sounds so terrible!! If i were the instructor and I noticed she was going down, I would try and grab her or do anything I could to help her. I think the family will be really upset and disappointed with the company, but they probably couldn't do a lot for this accident.
