Is band underrated?

As a band student, I have noticed that kids outside of the program tend to stereotype us. For example, multiple videos on social media depict band students as weird, stupid, and often socially akward. While there are a few cases of this being true, the vast majority of students in band are normal compared to the average student. In fact, multiple sources suggest that band is actually benefical to boost your already average skills .

There are many different claims to support this theory. For example, students in band grow to have better vocabulary than their peers. The National Academy of Sciences stated that students who have participated in band for 3 years are better at detecting speech sounds and patterns. As a matter of fact, playing an instrument uses every part of your brain.

Futhermore, engaging in band increases your emotional perception. The European Journal of Science found that those who are musically trained had a greater chance of identifying vocal emotions. They suspect this is because msuic conveys so much emotion with a lack of words, it becomes easier to recognize.

These are many more studies showing much more statistics:

-Playing an instrument reduces stress, creates patience and perseverance, develops music appreciation, induces creativity, increases memory compatibility, etc.

-Playing in band gives students a sense of belonging, helps produce life skills, creates a "work"(band)/life balance, shows students how to work together, etc.

In conclusion, there are many benefits to joining band. The only thing that is really preventing students from joining is the social stigma surrounding being a student withing the band program. I believe that everyone should feel free and welcomed into the music program without the fear of being bullied or generalized unfairly.

Do you think band is beneficial?

Should the band be appreciated more?

Why do you think people make fun of those in band?

  • Great topic choice(+5) and super job Gianna!

  • I don't personally have a preference on wether or not there should be banned for most people they don't seem to like it as I don't either but for some people I think that it gives them somehting to do outside of school and for some people it might be something that people look forward too.

    • I'm not sure what your comment is trying to say.

  • I think that band can be beneficial for some students, but certainly not me. I think band should be appreciated more because of how hard it actually is to learn how to play different instruments. I think that everyone who does a sport or club gets made fun of and not just band.

    • I agree with your second sentence. It is hard for beginners to learn new instruments, mostly because of their determination and feeling like they are falling behind. However, I think students in band definetely get more harassed than students in other activities.

  • I do think that band is beneficial because many parts of music can help you develop in many ways. It is also good to be a well-rounded person. I do think that sometimes the band could be appreciated more because we are there for a lot of things. I think people make fun of band kids because they usually don't do sports so they are seen as weak.

    • I agree with your last statement. What people don't see is that band students carry very heavy instruments, as they are almost all made of metal, and have to march and play with them.

  • Band can be pretty beneificial for students that are interested. Band is definitly not easy to do so the skills it takes to play the intruments is cool. I have never been apart of the band but everything comes with stereotypes no matter what you do.

    • I think that while some instruments may be challengng, others are well known to be easy to learn. I learned one instrument in a day or two and another in a few short minutes. Still, I can see why people hesitate as they are also afraid to be viewed differently by their friends.

  • I think band can definitely be benefical to people, but personally I do not think it is for me. Band definitely takes up a big chunk of time, so it would be hard to be able to do sports at the same time. I think there is a stereotype because those people sometimes tend to be the smart people. I think that is a good thing, but others may think it is bad or just be jealous.
