The whole country knows what happened during the Monday Night Football game against the Buffalo Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals. The 24-year-old Damar Hamlin collapsed due to a cardiac arrest. This cardiac arrest could have been an instance of commotio cordis which is a blunt force impact disrupts the heart’s rhythm. This type of cardiac arrest is very rare.

In the 21st century 11-player tackle football was trending in high school, until the 2009-2010 academic year. The newest survey from the NFHS shows that in the 2021-22 academic school year there are less than 1 million people involved in 11-player high school football. That is the first time on record with fewer than a million players in 11-player football. This is a decrease of 12.2% from the peak in the years of 2008-2009. Football isn’t the only sport decreasing in size basketball is also decreasing. On the other hand, track and field and soccer are increasing. Soccer is increasing the most from the sports. In the 2018-19 school year there were 4.5 million boys involved in sports and there is 3.4 million girls involved in sports in that same school year. Now there are 200,000 less girls and boys as well, 400,000 people, in total, less in a 4 year span.

In my opinion, I don’t think that it is because of the injuries. I think its from the new technology. I think that the injuries also have some play in the decrease of people or students but not as much as technology. The new technology is starting to make people “lazier”. Instead of actually playing the sport you can play in online with friends instead.

Why do you think the number of students are decreasing?

Do you think that technology and online games play a part in the numbers?

  • Good topic choic and well done Colton. I would like toi see yoru sources listed. Also be sure to reply back three different days. You were busy yesterday! I do understand that you were at jazz which made it difficult.

  • In my personal opinion, I think that one of the main reasons enrollment in sports like these is going down is because, for the most part, as more and more generations are brought up in the modern world, they are becoming softer and are instilled with a weaker work ethic. They will often just quit if it gets hard, or they may not even go out for the sport in the first place to avoid the added work.

  • I think that the number of kids is going down because of the kids wanting to try more in school or just mess around or just go home after school. Another reason could be that they don't want to deal with injuries that can affect how they preform in school or just their home life.

  • I personally believe that the number of kids wanting to is going down by each generation becasue the more that we have the softer that they will be is what I feel like because they will be to soft to play a contact sport because they do not want to get hurt in the process.

  • I think that numbers are decreasing because as there are more generations, they become softer. As they become softer, they want to quit contact sports such as football and hockey, because they don't want to get a 'boo boo' or an 'owie'. We need to grow up and learn that injuries are part of life and we need to have fun.

    • I agree. I think that each generation is getting softer and softer and if they aren't good at the sport right away they want to quit because they don't want to put effort or don't want to get hurt.

  • Personally, I think less people are participating in high school football because of the possibilities for concussions and other serious injuries. Most of the time, I don’t think online gaming or technology has caused participation to decrease, but that is not impossible.

    • I agree. The possibility of getting a concussion or serious injuries is going up. Honestly, I think they can do more to find ways to prevent those as much as possible.

  • I don't think that sports participation numbers are going down because of technology or video games. I believe that the reason why football numbers are decreasing is because of injuries and the aftermath of said injuries. A possible explanation for the declining numbers could also be that people are wanted to be more academically involved.

    • I kinda agree with what you said because I think that technology and video games plays a big part in sports. I do agree that some people want to become more academically involved.
