Getting Rid of Grades?

There has been talk that Harlan Community might get rid of the grading system. We know that grades can be controversial. Grades allow teachers to know how their students are doing, and they can reflect on their own teaching. Grades also can be very stressful for students because it can be very difficult to maintain that perfect A for many students.

Let’s talk about the pros. The main pro for students is that they can allow students to feel less stressed and actually focus on the material they are learning. This would also lead to a lot less cheating at school. Students feel pushed to pass a class so they will do anything to pass, including cheating. Taking away the grading system would also stop grade inflation. The average grade in college was a C and now it is an A. So if you don’t have an A, you are below average.

Now the cons are, Grades are an easy system to look at. It makes it easy for educators to understand where their students are falling. It also helps students understand the work they have to put in to get their desired grade. Grades also allow students to take responsibility for their learning and put in the work. It makes a student feel good when they see a good grade they worked hard for.

To conclude, I think getting rid of the grading system is not logical. The pros sound nice, but I believe they are truly unrealistic. Like how are you supposed to get into college without grades for the college to look at? It appears that an attempt at this will ultimately fail and we will have to resort to the grading system again.

Are you pro-grading or anti-grading system and why?

Do you think taking away the grading system would work why or why not?

  • Good topic choice and one that hasn't been done so +5. Your summary is good(a bit brief, however) and you also did a great job replying to people. This topic goes much deeper than just the base level. There is something called "standards based grading" and "outcomes based grading" that look to focus on whether students know the standard and less on the grade. I would have liked you to delve deeper into this topic but you kept it as the base level which is fine too.

  • I think it'd be better to alter the grading system rather than getting rid of it as a whole. The point of the system is to keep both students and teachers on track about how students are processing the materials that are handed to them. Getting completely rid of grades would be awful and somewhat defeat the purpose of school.

  • I like that you can track your grades through your semester so you know if you should pay more attention or if it is okay to relax a little bit in school. But i think that the grade range is a little bit too strict. Like if you receive 50% on a test you don’t fail.

  • I get the point of the grading system, but I think that they are only useful to keep students on top of their work. Otherwise, they serve no purpose in actually measuring what students actually learned.

  • A lot of people think the grading system is perfectly fine how it is but I think that it needs to be changed a little bit. I don't think the grading system needs to be taken away. If you were to take away the grading system no student would try to learn or pay attention in school.

  • I think the grading system should be changed a little bit but not taken completely out. I think that they grade percents should be wider. For example, A-100% - 85% or something like this. Taking the grading system out of school would make school a complete zoo because there would be no control or order in the classes.

  • i believe that many people do find that taking away the grading system would be a very good idea, but I believe that it would kinda take away the process of learning and students would not try that hard anymore due to the system being gone. i believe that with this system it can be beneficial for students learning.

  • I think that getting rid of the grading system sounds good to the ear but really doesn't make sense in the brain. Without grades school would become useless and kind of a joke. I think that grades can be stressful but it teaches students how to be mature and how to try.

  • Personally, I think it would be useless if there were no grades, and I think that there must be grades. I don't think that taking the grading system away would work because then students wouldn't do any of their work, and all they would do is mess around.

  • I think that grades are very much needed, I think that the schools that do this will be/ are wrong, How do the teachers know what to teach? How do they know what needs to be worked on? Wouldn't school then be pointless? The good kids would struggle, and the bad kids would, be having a ball.
