Flint Water Crisis

Nakiya Wakes and her two children wanted a new start so they moved to Flint, Michigan. A few weeks later, she learns that her family is growing, she is pregnant. She soon found out that she was having a miscarriage. Nakiya was crushed, she was so excited to have another little one running around. She went to the hospital for another follow up and the doctor found something amazing. The doctor found another heart beat; he said she was expecting twins and one had survived. Nakiya was so surprised and happy about this. She said that this was going to be her miracle baby. Her sadness form losing one baby was taking over by joy for an expecting baby. Nakiya began to buy clothes and things for the baby. While he was in her second trimester, she found out that she had another miscarriage. Ounce again she was devastated. After returning from the hospital, she received a letter  that says pregnant women shouldn't drink water from Flint. She was so mad it was a simple thing that possible could have killed her babies. This problem began when the government decided to switch the city's water source and use water from the Flint river to save money. It is said the water from the river ate away iron and lead pipes which caused lead to leach into the water supply. The city switched back over a year and a half later, but the damage was already done. Nakiya also thinks that her two kids have been affected by lead poisoning from the water as well. They both tested positive for lead in their blood.

Questions:

1. would continue to live here if you had gone through this situation?

2. Would you still try to have kids even after loosing two?

My Opinion:

I feel so bad for Nakiya; loosing one child is hard enough, bu loosing two is terrible. It would be hard to get over that situation and focus on the other two kids. I don't think I would live there anymore after going through all of that. It would be very difficult to move on, but I would still want to at least try to have kids

  • Good but all of your comments were done on the same day.

  • Wow this story is very sad. I feel so bad for her. Losing two babies in that amount of time and also having some hope along the way would be terrible. I would probably move away from the town and live somewhere else just knowing that this problem is what killed my babies.

  • This is a very very sad story. I would probably not want to continue to live there, but if you were already affected there isn't a lot moving could change. It would be hard going through two miscarriages, especially the way she did, but if I wanted more kids I would probably continue to try but make sure my health is good and doesn't host any possible danger.

    • Ya I agree with you that if you have already been affected, moving won't really change the situation.

  • I feel terrible for this woman. After finding out this type of information I would definitely try and have more kids because it shows that it wasn't her fault she had the miscarriages. I would move away if I lived here.

    • Ya it definitely wasn't her fault for having two miscarriages and it would be an amazing story if she let it go and had other kids

  • I would not want to live there after having two miscarriages and finding out that both of my children have lead in their system. I would still have have kids but I would definitely move away and wait awhile before I tried to even have kids again.

    • I would be scared for my kids if they had lead in their system too

  • I would not want to live there after having two misscarriages and finding out that both of my children have lead in their bodies. I would still want to have kids but I would definetely take more precautions so something that devastating doesnt have to happen again.

    • I agree, I would be more careful about my next pregnancy after this
