Figure Skaters and Eating Disorders

Two Figure Skaters Gracie Gold from the United States and Yulia Lipnitskaya from Russia both were at the last olympics and won metals. They quite because of an eating disorder. When figure skating the performers are being judged on their jumps finishes and their overall routines however some think they are being judged on the bodies. these aren't the only skaters that have had eating disorder and Gracie and Yulia are only teenagers. It's not only females are coming out that they have eating disorders males are coming out now too.

Questions:

If you were either of Gracie or Yulia's parents how would you handle this situation with the eating disorder?

Would you ever let them go back to Skating?

if i was there parent i would want them to get help right away because i want them to be the best version of them and be healthy. I would feel bad if that's what they thought they had to have this certain body and that's what they thought the judges were looking at. I would probably let them go back if it's what they really wanted to do and if they promised they would not make themself sick or anything to hurt them and to maintain that certain body.

  • Well done overall. Be sure to proofread as there are quite a few errors in your first paragraph.

  • If i was their parents i would make sure to watch how much they eat but, let them eat whatever they want to. I would let them skate, if they love it then they can do it. the only thing holding them back is themselves.

  • I would try and get them to go somewhere that would hep them but still wold beable ot skate if they wanted to. I would let the mskate if thy wanted to but only if they got help with there eating disorder.

  • I would hopefully try to get help, but people with these types of mental and health disorders seeking help isn't usually the case. I would hope that I would have friends that would help me get support and help. I would if it was what they loved and they were doing better, why not?

  • If I were a parent I would make sure that they are completely healthy when they figure skate.  I would have them make sure that they would complete multiple checkups and requirements. I would let them go back to skating if they wanted to pursue it but I would be very worried yet supportive.

  • As a parent I would have them get help so they can get better. I would let them skate as long as they got better and they wanted to contine in skating competitively.

  • If I were the parents I would talk to them and get help so that they can get better. I would let them if they got better and really wanted to continue to skate. However, I would probably not let them skate competitively.

  • I feel like I would notice that they weren't eating or whenever they go to the bathroom they run water or something. As a parent I would get them help right away because I wouldn't want them to suffer anymore. I would let them go back to skating if that is what they loved. But, if they start to change there eating I would pull them out right away.

  • If I were either of these girl's parents, I would get them help. Eating disorder are serious, and ignoring them is detrimental to both their bodies and their emotional health. I would have them focus on their health first before worrying about ice skating. Their life is more valuable than a sport. I would let them go back, but I would make sure they were healthy both physically and mentally. As for the judges, if they were judging them for their bodies, that is terrible. These young girls are sick, and they need help. Judging them won't do anything besides make them feel worse.

    • Like you said its not something to can just put off and pretend that they dont have it. I think its good that you said to put you daughter first and not keep pushing them to ice skate and get them help at the same time because most likey the help you are getting them isnt helping then.
