Do curfews keep teens out of trouble?

The 12 A.M. curfew for 14-18 and the 10 P.M. curfew for 13 years or younger has been around for over a decade. It started in December 2009 for the purpose of keeping teens out of public places between set hours. The curfew law says that “ teens under the age of 18 cannot be on public grounds such as public parks, schools or vacant car lots until 6 a.m.” It was also made a thing to stop juvenile crimes.

The breaking of the curfew will result in a curfew fine. It will be fined to your parents even if they didn’t know you were out. The focus of the curfew is to stop unsupervised minors to stop committing crimes around the place they live. Law enforcement thinks that enforcing the curfew that will create an environment with fewer crimes and keep kids out of trouble.

I personally think that the curfew is dumb on my part. I'm not going to do anything that will get me in trouble no matter the time. To stop more of the crime that is happening after curfew is if the kids have something bad on their record then they should have a set curfew. By doing this it would stop more of the crime but let the other minors be out longer knowing they won’t do anything wrong.

Do you think there should be a curfew?

What time do you think the curfew should be?

  • Well done overall Isabel! The topic is new(+5) and you did a good job replying to people as well. I would like to see more of the history behind teen curfews and how it's impacted crime/drug use, etc. Be sure to mention Harlan in your first sentence as well so people know.

  • I do not believe in a curfew and I think its stupid, I think parents or gaurdians have full controll on your curfew. I get the point of the curfew though, to keeps the streets clean or whatever you would want to call it.

  • I don't think there should be a curfew law. i feel like that is something your parents should enforce. If you are a trouble maker you are going to break the rules anyway so enforcing it on good kids is really pointless. I feel like the law thinks they control children when their parents should have some say.

  • I do not think that a curfew is a necessary law. For one, most teenagers do not care whether it is past the curfew, so it will not stop them from going out. Secondly, I personally think that it is the parents job to determine when a child should be allowed out of the house.

  • I don't think a curfew will do anything to keep teens out of trouble, teens will do whatever they want regardless of the rules. Teens will do illegal things whether it's before or after the curfew time and there's really nothing anyone can do about it because teenagers will be teenagers no matter what.

  • I think a curfew might help keep teens out of trouble. Some parents have a curfew and the kid has to be home at 10 - 11 pm. Then a curfew should be put in and that is a good idea for the parents. It might help the kid with time management and be at home before curfew.

  • i dont think there should be a curfew because kids are still gonna be out past curfew and do stuff like hanging out with there friends or just driving around for fun on the weekends cause its the weekend kids arent really paying attention to times.

    • I agree with you that there should not be a curfew.

  • I do not think there should be a curfew. I do not really think it keeps kids out of much trouble. They can really do illegal things and get in trouble wether it is before their curfew or not. It doesn't really matter what time the kids are out, they can still do that exact same thing.

  • I don't think there should be a curfew because it doesn't keep kids out of trouble. Almost every kid breaks the curfew so it doesn't benefit anyone at all. I believe that curfew should be left to parents to decide how late they should be out, not the law.
