Dead Body Found in Elevator

The Gaoling district of Xi' residential building is now under fire, in China, after a forty-three year old woman's dead body was found. On January 30, maintenance crews reported to the residential building after issues occurred with the elevator. All the workers did was yell from the floor above the location the elevator was stuck, to see if anyone would reply. Due to the Lunar New Year holiday, maintenance wasn't done until March 1st. State media reports that the body was a woman who lived in the building, and she easily could've been dead for over a month. Building management and elevator maintenance were arrested and charged.

Questions:

How do you think think no one knew or reported this woman missing?

Do you think it was right to leave the elevator stuck, with no power supply for that long?

Do you think that elevator safety needs to be increased?

In my opinion I think this story is very sad, and kind of shocking that something like that would happen today. I think that all elevators should be required to have cameras or some sort of better communication system so something like this can't happen. I am surprised that more reports weren't filed about the woman missing, and nothing being done about the elevator.

  • Well done!

  • Wow what a horrible story! This is very sad and I don't understand how no one looked for her. I definitely don't think that it was a good idea to leave the elevator stuck without any power. They could have at least opened the elevator to be sure that no one was in there, even if it was over a holiday.

    • I agree, leaving the elevator would've been one thing, but the fact that they left it with no power and didn't actually open it to assure it was empty was the worst part.

  • I am guessing that this women might have lived by herself and didn't have a lot of visitors. People also could have thought she was just gone a lot.

No. There was no reason for the elevator to be stuck that long and it couldn't have taken that much work to get it unstuck.

I think that they should increase safety only if it seems to have a lot of problems. There is no way to eliminate all elevator problems so there would be no point.

    • You have a good point, there really isn't anyway to completely solve all elevator problems, but things this serious definitely could be prevented.

  • I think that maybe the woman didn't get out much or lived by herself. I don't think it was right because a lot of people use elevators all the time. Even though there was no response, there easily could have been someone in there. I think elevator safety needs to be increased in China because something like this can't happen again. The woman starved to death, and she couldn't do anything about it.

    • Yelling for someone was definitely not the right response, because its not like its easy to hear through elevators. Like you said, people use elevators all the time, so accidents like this are kind of shocking because of how long it went on.

  • I don't think they should have went without fixing this elevator. I think this would be a terrible way to die the woman must have been suffering for days and days and gotten no help. This is such a sad story... Is there anything you can do to increase elevator safety? I don't think there is too much you can do to make them safer. Maybe just be smarter and make better decisions when an elevator breaks down and know to fix it.

    • I do agree, finding more ways to make elevators safer is very hard. It is very sad that this happened, I don't know how no one would've heard her because like you said, she most likely had to suffer in someway.

  • Its a sad story. In my opinion she might had not a lot of family members left. I think it wasn't right to let the elevator stuck for that long. I do not think that the elevator safety needs to be increased.
