Daylight Saving Time: is it Necessary

Daylight saving time is the process of moving the time forward one hour on the second Sunday of March. Then, nearly eight months later, on the first Sunday of November, the time is set back an hour. This process has always been used to get more use out of natural sunlight each day, however, its history is quite complex. Summarily, Benjamin Franklin suggested this practice in 1784 to limit the usage of candles. Daylight saving time became more popular during World War I to save fuel, eventually spreading throughout the world.

There are many advantages to daylight saving time. One of the greatest advantages is the environmental benefit which has many contributing factors. Firstly, daylight saving time extends evening daylight, consequently, less electricity is used for light. Another benefit is a lower rate of car accidents due to sunlight during later hours of the day. Lastly, because of daylight saving time, people are more active in the evening which allows for more spending. Overall, setting clocks back and forward one hour helps our world in many ways which are often overlooked when viewed at face value.

Daylight saving time also has many disadvantages which should be considered. The first and most obvious is a lack of sleep as individuals adjust to new schedules. A difference of one hour can initially create difficulties falling asleep and waking up which is quite inconvenient. This inconvenience is also relevant for certain industries, especially those who work outdoors. To summarize, daylight saving creates disadvantages that are not extreme, yet they affect almost everyone.

Many contrasting factors make it difficult to decide whether we should have daylight saving time. I believe we should continue to implement this practice in our lives for numerous reasons. The first of which is the severity of the advantages. For example, daylight saving time prevents car accidents which saves lives. The final reason I support daylight saving time is the difficulty of removing a practice which has lasted for so long.

Do you think daylight saving time is necessary?

Should we continue to use daylight saving time?

What other problems does daylight saving time create?

  • Great topic choice and super job Ben!

  • I personally don't like daylight savings time and we should just have whatever time we agree stays. In March when we change it many kids are upset or tired since they lost an hour of sleep especially since kids need more rest the adults.

  • I personally think that daylight savings time used to be very useful and was also very necessary. But I do not think it is serves as much of a purpose as it did back then, so I do not think we should continute to practice daylight savings in my opinion. Two states have already gotten rid of it completely.

    • I understand the thought behind removing this practice, but it does still serve a purpose. Although modern innovation is decreasing the need for daylight saving time, it has many benefits. Considering that Arizona and Hawaii do not use this practice, other states might do the same.

  • I think that daylight saving time is necessary because it cuts down the amount of electricity we use during the day. I think that it is a great idea to continue daylight saving time because the sun is out longer which means you can still do activities outside in the sun.

  • I think that daylight savings was very necessary but as new inventions and upgrades are made it isn't has necessary anymore. Although just because it isn't as necessary anymore doesn't mean we should change it, we are already used to it and its not going to kill us if we continue it.

  • I think we should continue to use daylight savings time because it's easier to guestimate what time it is based on the amount of sunlight outside. Because time was based off of sunlight anyway, I don't see why we wouldn't continue to adjust based on it.

    • I do like the thought of the relationship between sunlight and time. However, shortly after the time changes, it can be more confusing to guess the time based off of this. Another potential problem is the time of sunset changing throughout the year regardless.

  • I think that the fact that we are already adapted to the daylight savings time, I think that we should keep it. I enjoy having the summer with longer evenings and slightly later mornings. It also helps during harvest for farmers when we want to be able to start harvesting earlier in the day.

  • I think having daylight savings time is necessary. Personally, if we didn't have daylight savings, then during the summer, we would have shorter evenings and super early mornings. I think we should keep on using it, we have been doing it for a very long time, and I don't think it should be changed.
