Can organic farming be sustainable

As a person who has been in agriculture my whole life, having seen attempts on our farm to farm organically, I know there are not enough benefits to even consider it. The whole point of GMOs and the use of fertilizers and chemicals is to be able to increase production to meet demands.

Using genetically modified crops such as corn has really helped farmers to be able to meet demands, and still keep prices fairly cheap. In 1980, farmers were excited to get 80 to 115 bushel corn. Now we are getting on average about 250 to 280 bushel corn. That didn’t come from organic farming and not using chemical, fertilizers and not genetically modifying the crops.

When we did hogs without using medication and the special feeds it was not good. We lost more pigs in one round than we would have in 3 or 4 rounds. It doesn’t work. A common misconception is the medication stays in the meat. That could not be further from the truth. The medication is injected directly into the blood flow and unless you drink the blood right after or within a week of it being administered, the medication won’t affect you .

Organic farming sounds like a good idea but the reality is it makes it hard for farmers to produce enough to meet demands, causes more deaths in livestock, and will make you pay more for everything.

Do you think organic farming is sustainable?

Do you think it would be worth the increase in prices to switch to organic agriculture?

  • Great topic choice and well done Brian! I would like your summary a tad longer but that's about it.

  • I don't think organic farming is sustainable. It would make crops more expensive and less efficient. The world needs a lot of food and we can't afford to use organic crops. It would make farming a lot more difficult than it is now.

  • I don't know hardly anything about farming. From what ive heard, i don't think that organic farming should be the way to go. I feel like the farming system that we have now seems pretty good. I think that it would be harder to make than our farming process now.

  • Organic farming is not sustainable if everyone went to organic farming over night. It takes a lot more energy to produce a organic crop and it would take a massive amount of ground to sustain organic farming for the masses. Geneticly modified farming is the only way the world can function.

  • I have heard that organic farming isn't always healthier anyways. I think organic farming could be worse for some farmers since they wouldn't be making as much money, although I think there will always be a demand for organic foods. I do not think every farmer should switch to organic farming.

  • I don't think that organic farming is gonna be a  good thing because I think that farmings shouldn't change. I think that a lot  of people are all about change and I think that some change is god but I don't thing that there should be something such as organic farming cause there aren't enough advantages.

  • I personally do not think that organic farming is sustainable at the current rate of consumption that the world is in right now. I think that it would be nearly impossible to meet the demands of the consumers if we were to farm organically. I do not think that the extreme raise in prices would be worth it.

  • I don't think that organic farming is sustainable because, in the long run, we won't be able to meet the demands of the market today. I don't think it is worth the price increase either because we have GMO's for a reason so why would we have a higher price for the same thing.

  • I think it would be hard to sustain an organic farm. However, I do know organic farmers that are doing well. It would be hard to keep animals healthy wthout medications, and healthy feed. It would also be hard to get the most out of your crops with the growing population.

    • I agree. The organic farmers right now are doing pretty good financially, however, we wouldn't try it on our farm. It is a lot of extra work and having to worry abaout a whole bunch of regulations. I also don't see it working out on a large scale.
