Blackfeet Bison to Return

An American Indian Reservation in Montana is planning on relocated blackfeet bison to where they once came from. Over 140 years ago, we captured the bison in Montana and sent them to Elk Island National Park located in Canada. At one point in time, millions of buffalo roamed the Montana land, including the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains. There will be 89 buffalo that will be moved to the Indian reservation. The Indians used to live off of every part of the buffalo. Buffalo were at one point almost extinct.

Do you think it is a good idea to try to grow the population of the buffalo? Why or why noy?

Do you think there could be more poaching due to bringing the buffalo back? Why or why not?

What are your overall thoughts?

I think it is a good idea to bring them back to their native land because it is their natural habitat and there could be different conditions in Canada dealing with the weather instead of in the U.S. I am scared that people will try to kill them for their fur or just certain parts of their bodies.

  • Well done!

  • I think it is a great idea especially if they were almost extinct. Growing the population will allow the bison to roam in their homelands and to strive for years to come. I think poaching will be a small issue because there will be people caring for the bison and making sure they are living healthy. I think it is great that they are repopulating the bison and that they should do this with more animals.

    • I agree with you because there are many animals out there that are going extinct and I think we should be watching them more carefully to help stop them from all dying.

  • Well if they were almost extinct, I think it's a very good idea to try and repopulate the buffalo. There might be but I wouldn't be too worried about it. They should just try and repopulate the buffalo.

  • I think that it is a good idea to bring the buffalo back, although bringing them back could cause some changes within the habitat. It's a good idea to bring them back to their natural habitat though. I would be on the lookout for poachers though.
    • I agree with you because it will take some time for the buffalo to adapt to the habitat.

  • It would be great to help out the buffalo population because it would restore the population to normal levels. I'm not sure if poaching would be an issue with the buffalo population rising. Overall this would be a great addition to the wildlife in Montana.

  • I think it is a good idea to grow the population of the buffalo back and try to replace some of them back to their native territory, because we should never drive an animal extinct, especially a gentle giant such as the buffalo. We shouldn't ever drive wolves extinct from the area either because they were an integral part of life in the area, however if either the bison or the wolf become a problem, we should relocate them.

    • Yes! I agree with you because this was their land long before we came here.
