Artificial Turf Vs. Natural Grass

There has been a lot of debate on whether natural grass or artiifical turf is better in lawns, playing fields for sports, etc. There are definitely pros and cons to both. Artificial turf is increasing in many places especially football fields, baseball fields, and even some yards. We will look at the pros and cons of both so you can decide which one you think is better or which one you prefer.

We will start with artificial turf. To begin, artificial turf can be expensive to install and isn't biodegradeable. It can also trap bacteria in warm and wet climates and it can get very hot on warm days. There is less give in artificial turf as well. This causes many knee and ankle injuries and many turf burns. However, turf requires very little maintenance and eliminates fertilizers, pesticides, etc. It also always looks healthy and is ready all year round which helps people in super dry climates. It can last a long time and there are many varieties of color and types of turf as well.

Natural grass has many pros and cons as well. First off, you can't beat the look and feel of a nicely mowed lawn or field. Growing grass is cheaper than turf and it is also better for the environment. There is more give on natural grass causing less injuries in sports the playing surface is cooler. Some cons of natural grass is that it needs to be mowed, watered, fertilized, which can take a while and be difficult to maintain. It also can't be used all year round.

I personally like natural grass better. I like taking care of it and putting a little extra work in and think it looks better. However, turf is nice because it can be used all the time.

What do you prefer?

Have you ever played on turf?

Does turf or natural grass look better to you?

  • Good topic choice and well done Weston!!

  • In my personal opinion, I think it depends on the quality of both the turf and the grass, as well as what sport you are playing. I personally prefer turf for football, but grass for soccer. But, I only feel this way if the grass is properly maintained. That being said I have played on turf that is not properly taken care of and that is not much better.

  • I think ti definitely depends on the circumstance and what it is needed for. In certain cases, turf is for sure easier to handle and manage. Sometimes though, grass is definitely a better choice especially if people are willing to take care of it.

  • I think that it depends on how well maintained the grass is. Real grass is better when it is taken care of. I personally prefer turf because it seems a little softer than the hard ground, and it always looks nice. I have played on both turf and grass, but turf seems better to me. Turf also can be painted to look nicer and it stays looking nice.

  • As a soccer player, I prefer turf. This is because it is mostly smooth and you don't have to worry about random bumps in the ground. One of the primary cons of turf however, is the stress it can cause on a player's knees.

  • I think that artificial turf is the best because it is softer for sports, doesn't grow at all which means no lawnmowing, weedeating, etc. But turf is expensive, for the average lawn it would cost around $291,287.50 when you look at how much it is per square foot then multiply that by the average lawn size.

  • It would depend on how your natural grass grows. Like in some places it doesn't grow like at my house there is a spot that no grass will grow. I think in that case I would use artificial turf instead of natural. I think that turf also looks better in some cases.

  • I prefer turf better because i feel like i slip more on grass. Turf gives me better traction and doesnt hurt as much if you fall on turf unlike grass. Grass can also get messy and really hard to take care of. I have played on turf and lot. To me turf looks better then grass.

  • I personally prefer natural grass over turf. I like the softer feeling of natural grass over the sharper feeling of the turf especially when sliding on it. I think that a mid natrual lawn or feild looks way better than a mid turf one but a really really high quality turf feield is better than any grass field.

  • I would prefer natural grass at my house, but if I'm going to be playing on it I would choose turf. Especially for upkeep, you wouldn't want to constantly have to cut the grass and redraw lines. I have played on turf and it's nice, unless it is hot and then the turf absorbs the heat and makes it even hotter.
