Are kids more depressed than they used to be?

Depression is an illness that is really common through teenagers. It makes them feel sad and lose interest in doing something that they used to like. Depression can make you lose your appetite or have troubles sleeping. It can be treated with therapy or medication. Through the past few years it has been getting worse for teenagers. Unfortunately some people can’t recover from it and decide to stop fighting. In US suicide has become the second leading cause of death among teenagers. This just demonstrates how important it should be for adults to identify the illness before it gets too bad and provide some help.

I think that social media has an important impact on teenagers. And it might be one of the reasons most teenagers suffer from depression. I think that when you open any social media app you see parts of the life of people that claim to be perfect. They show you the best from them. This can make you feel overwhelmed since your life is not like that. Social media can cause you to think that you need to have a perfect body or your life should be perfect. Experts say that young people are at a serious rate of long-term mental health issues, and there could be more things done to help them.

I also think that sometimes young people don’t know how to deal with stress and anxiety so it just gets really bad to a point where you get depressed. I think school might also be an important cause. When you need to get good grades and study for your tests and do all the homework can be stressful. I feel that sometimes parents put too much pressure on their kids. I think school is important but it shouldn’t be more important than your mental health.

  • Good topic choice and one that hasn't been done so +5. Your summary is well done but I would like you to mention what studies say about this within your summary. You did a great job replying to students. Well done Alexia!

  • I feel like more people are becoming more open about mental health and struggling with it. I don't think more people have become more depressed, but rather more people are talking about it now then they used to back then.

  • No, I think they don't really know what depression is and just say it. You hear a lot that teens say that they feel depressed even though they feel fine. Social Media effects on everything in our life meanwhile, i don't think we can't just blame it on SM.

  • I personally think that students are more depressed now then they used to be. Social media more than likely affects teenagers because of all of the hatefull things people say on social media. Also school is definetly a factor in why some students are more depressed now than they used to be.

  • I think that kids are more depressed now than they wre 30 years ago. You have all of these hateful things floating around on social media. You also have the stress of homework that leads to kids feeling depressed, but in the end it think its how you attack the problems in your life.

  • I think that teens aren't getting any more depressed than before. I think that social media affects some teenagers but others not so much. I think that teenagers are kind of forcing the idea of being open about your mental health so it is becoming a bigger topic.

  • I don't think kids are necessarily more depressed now because we have it a lot easier than people use to. I think people are just more open about it now and people can Identify it easier than they could many years ago. I think social media and school have a big effect on teen mental health.

  • I feel like kids are depressed and school is 80% of the issue. Social media contributes to kids' sadness just as much as a lot of other things do, parents just tend to blame social media or just our phones in general because they didn't have the same issues. We are definitely more affected by depression than our parent's generation was. That's just based on statistics.

  • I think kids are depressed but I do not think that there are more kids than before. I also think that social media does play a part in some kids depression but not all of it. I also think that kids these days are a little softer so they take things the wrong way and then get depressed.

  • I don't think that there are more kids that are depressed than there were in previous generations. I just think that there is a lot more awareness about mental health. It is talked about a lot more so more kids are saying that they are depressed.
