Are electric cars really better for the Environment?

Lately lots of people have been talking about getting electric cars, especially with the gas prices as high as they are. Many people beleive that electric cars are a lot better for the environment, but that might not be the case. To start off, the batteries for the cars are made out of lithium. To get lithium out of the earth, it takes up to 2 million gallons of water per metric ton of lithium. This does not work very good considering most of the lithium is in regions of the world where it is the most dry. Once the lithium is filtered out of this water, it is often returned to rivers or lakes where it can contaminate the water.

The production of the elecctric vehicles also has a bigger environmental impact. It takes 1.3 to 2 times the amount of greenhouse gasses to prouduce an electric cars that it does a typical internal combustion car. This is mainly to the increased use of cobalt. The mining of cobalt also produces lots of hazardus byproducts that can toxify the environment. Cobalt mines often contain sulfer, whch creates sulferic acid. A lot of that ends up in rivers and oceans which is very bad for the water.

The cars may not requre gas, but you have to charge them. Most of the power grid arount our country, especially around the midwest, are powered by fossil fuels. So every time you charge your car you are burning fossil fuels. Also, if your car dies along the side of the road, you will have to get it charged somehow. This will most likely take place by a gas or diesel vehicle pulling a gas or diesel generator. So you really arent helping the environment at all.

Do you think that electric vehicles are worse for the environment?

Would you like to own an electric vhehicle?

  • Good topic choice even though electric cars have been done before. Your angle on the story is different. Be sure to include your personal thoughts and opinions within your summary. Also be sure to reply to student comments more frequently.

  • I think electric cars are just as good for the environment as gas and diesel cars and trucks are. The reason for that is because of the batteries once they die they go to a landfill and are never used again. Or people spend almost 20 thousand dollars to get they redone.

  • They are worse for the enviroment because there is no possible way to disspose the battery. So either way ur digging yourself in a hole. Heck no i would not want to drive a piece of junk around that is all stupid, its just all beacuse of immisions thats why you cant delete diesel trucks anymore.

  • I don't think that electric cars are any better or worse for the environment because of how they are made. A lot of the electricity is made by burning coal, which is a natural resource, so it's not better for the environment. Personally, I wouldn't like to own an electric vehicle.

  • I think that producing electric car at a large scale is worse for the environment. I think that the damage to the environment which is done during the process of making electric cars compared to the process of making regular combustion engine cars is much worse.

  • I don't think that people understand that in many aspects electric cars aren't much better then gas cars. I think the idea of saving the environment is good, but it isn't reasonable. I think overall they don't really help anything.

  • I don't think electric cars are any better or worse for the environment. I think the process of making the car is a lot worse than people would think. Personally I would not like to own an electric car.

  • I dont know if they are any worse for the environment, but I personally dont think they are as good for the environment as people make them out to be. I think just the car is better for the environment, but making the car is so much worse.

  • I don't think electric cars are better for the environment. Most electrcity is made by the burning of coal. Coal is a very dirty burning natural resource. This means that every time you charge your electric car, you are using the energy from burning coal. So electric cars are not a whole lot better for the world, unless they find a way to charge them without the burning of natural resources.

  • I don't know if they are particularly worse for the environment. I just think that they aren't as good as people make them out to be. I would like to have an electric vehicle just because they are nice and convenient. I would be just as fine with a normal car.
