American Writer Stabbed to Death!

Last Thursday American writer Avijit Roy was hacked to death by extremists after he regularly and openly criticized the religion of Islam through his blog. Although he was native to Bangladesh, he was an American citizen.  He frequently received threats saying that if he ever visited his home in Bangladesh Islamic extremists would hunt him down and kill him, well one day they followed through with those threats. For unknown reasons Avijit ignored these threats and  returned to Bangladesh where he attended a book fair to talk about his newest book, he has written 7 books in total. It was as he was leaving the book fair he and his wife were attacked, the attackers stabbed and chopped with knives and machetes and killed him and left his wife badly cut and missing a finger.

Why do you think Avijit Roy ignored the threats and returned to Bangladesh?

What would you have done?

  • He probably ignored the threats because he wasn't afraid of the people who wrote them, felt too big into himself to be intimidated by random strangers, or felt like he would be able to protect himself in some way, maybe? What I would have done if I were Avijit Roy I would have probably STOPPED being stupid, and quit bagging on people's religion. If I were the people of Islam, I would have protested against him publicly and told him that our religion is just as efficient and loving as yours.

  • If he had gone back for something really important, then maybe I would understand. However, he went back for a book fair that couldn't have been very important. If I were him I wouldn't have gone. I would have taken the threats seriously. If the threats were coming from average people, then I would have ignored them, but because they were from Islamic Extremists, I would've definitely stayed home. He should have at least left his wife at home.

  • He probably thought they were just trying to scare them and maybe trying to get money. I would probably carry a weapon of some kind just in case the threats would be real.

  • Because he was being stupid and probably thought they were kidding, but obviously they weren't He should have been smart and shouldn't have gone over there. I would have taken it to the police and I would not have gone back to Bangladesh.

  • They were probably trying to scare him, but he just ignored it because he didn't think it would really happen. People can be really mean and threats like those are unneeded, I think he should've call the cops about this. If that was my home town, my family would be there, so that would be my reason to go back.

  • He probably thought they were just trying to frighten him into not coming back into Bangladesh. I think he just didn't see the importance and danger of these threats. Personally, I would not have gone, even if there had just been one single threat.

  • He probably didnt think that they were completely true. He probably should have been more direct to them and took them seriously and address them to someone about the threats.

  • Probably he didn't believe the threats. I think he should have told somebody about the threats. If a threat really looks serious I would go to the police and tell them.

  • I think he should have cared more about the threats. I would have asked for bodyguards and I wouldn't have went to the book fair. I think he didn't wanted the extremists to rule his life.
