The Amish

Try to imagine an ethnic group that doesn’t use technology or electricity, can’t join the army, and can’t attend High School or college. Well since there are Amish people there is no need to imagine it because it’s a reality for them. The first Amish came to America in the early 17th century and since then it has spread across the United States in places like Pennsylvania, Maine, Ohio, Kansas, Iowa and many other states. Let's take a look at what the Amish can and can't do.

What can the Amish actually not do? Well first of all, they can't own automobiles like a car or truck, use electricity, own television, radio, etc. They can only use certain kinds of electronic devices for certain purposes. They also can't get divorces, attend a college or highschool or join the military as stated before. So why do the Amish choose to live this way? Well it's because of their beliefs. The Amish believe in God and live a simple unworldly life. They believe that men and women should wear plain modest clothing and that men should grow beards and never shave them. The Amish follow an Ordnung (set of rules/orders), this is intended to keep their communities separate from the rest of the world to maintain a traditional way of life.

How different is their lifestyle from ours? The Amish are US citizens and pay taxes, property, sales, estate, etc. The Amish also don't have social security numbers. The US congress freed the Amish from having to do so because the Amish viewed it as a form of commercial insurance which they opposed. Many Amish people use modern medicine but more traditionally prefer alternative forms of medical treatments. The Amish are somewhat like us but living differently. They still have lifes and pay taxes just like we do. In conclusion, the Amish do live their lives differently from us but they are a group of people who believe in living their lives differently from others due to beliefs.

What do you think about the Amish lifestyle?

Would you ever become Amish?

  • Great topic choice and well done Charlotte! Be sure to check back on Thursday to reply.

  • I really don't think that the amsih lifestyle isn't for me at all. There are to much stuff that i do in a day that wouldn't rack up. But it is sure interesting the certain things that they do compared to us.

  • i think the amish lifestyle isn't for me i think their are too many things i use in my daily life i could live without but everyone is entitled to there own beliefs and opions so i don't care if people are amish i think their culture is interesting and cool.

  • What do you think about the Amish lifestyle? I feel like their lifestyel is very interesting it is way different then how most people grew up it is nothing like how a traditional family would grow up I feel like being Amish wouldn't be bad I feel like it would be interesting and i would like to try it.

  • I think that there lifestyle is different that what were used to and interesting to see how they prioritize traditional values and live in harmoney with nature and do different things. I personally dont think I could last as a amish person they live there lifestyle very different than how I would do it so it would be a big change.

  • what do you think about the amish lifestyle? I belive that it would be hard to live an amish lifestyle bacause thay and a vary diffrent way of getting around and plus thay dont use tecnolegy and most people now a days are addicted to their phones.

  • Would you ever become Amish? No, I would never become Amish. This is due to them not being able to have vehicles such as cars and trucks, also due to the fact that they can't go to traditional highschool or college.

  • The Amish lifestyle is tough. It is an interesting way of living. It is different from what we have today with our ways of transportation and technology. It would be a intreting lifestyle to have and see how they go day by day for living also i think that it would be very tough.

  • I think that the Amish lifestyle is restrictive. While I have nothing against the religion, I personally could never abide or live by their regulations. Living without a car or modern transportation restricts a person's ability to live life by common standards. For example, you'd be unable to get certain jobs or go to certain events.

  • I think that the Amish are pretty unique. Because of how they avoid technology and do everything manually or in traditional practices. But it is good for them, they prioritize God and familiy, which is important. They are pretty healthy and in good condition. But I don't think that I would become Amish even though there are benefits. The idea of no technology just gets to me. I personally think that it would be difficult living like an Amish.
