Teachers on Strike in West Virginia

In West Virginia, teachers will be on strike for the eighth day on Monday. The teachers don't think they are getting payed enough and say they aren't going to stop until they get a 5% raise and better benefits. The average salary for a teacher in West Virginia is $45,000 which is amoung the lowest in the United States. All 55 counties in the state announced school closings for Monday, March 5th. This all started February 22 when nearly 20,000 teachers walked out and it has kept about 277,000 students out of school. It is not known how long it could take to solve this problem but it could stretch out for several more days.

Questions

Do you think that teachers should be keeping kids out of schools for this reason? Why or why not?

I don't think the kids should be kept out of school because of this reason because education is important and kids should be at school if at all possible.

How would you feel if you were one of the kids and wasn't able to go to school because of this?

Yeah, it would be fun to be out of school but I wouldn't like having to make these days up later on.

If you were a teacher in West Virginia would you go on strike too? Why or why not?

I would do everything I could to prevent going on strike but if all the other teachers in the state went on strike I would too because there isn' that much you can do to prevent it and I would be upset if I was getting paid less than the rest of the teachers in the U.S.

  • Your summary is good but you didn't reply to anyone.

  • No i think that just because they want something that they should look at it more peacfuly and should not affect the students who did nothing to desterve the lack of education. I do think that it would be fun to not be in school becasue if it but i wouldn't like haveing lost so much education adn learning time and would hate haveing to make up the days later on.

  • Honestly kids or students shouldn't be affectd by this and it sucks to see that they are, on the students perspective it's just a day or two off who cares, but with the teachers and their pay i'd agree that they may need a raise but this should be a final resort before all else.

  • Education is very important so I don’t think they should be kept out of school like this. It would be really nice to have a break but that also would mean going to school longer . I think I would fight back but not over react to much because tjats just the way it is and could be very hard to change .

  • I think that the kids should not be out of school, they are not to blame for what teachers want, but teachers also have children and need the money to support them. If I were one of those kid, wow! it would be incredible, but it would be affecting my knowledge and I would have to stay behind in my studies, and that does not sound fun. If I were one of the teachers, I would probably go for a strike for such a low payment, but I am not a person who likes to protest, so I would probably move to another place.

  • No I do not think that we should not be kept out of school because of the reason that the teachers are having with the shool but I honeslty don't care because its missing a day of school or a few days depending. I don't think I would care too much if I was one of the kids that didn't get to go into school that day.

  • I think the teachers union needs to make an agreement, taking kids out of school isn't good for anyone. If I were a kid I would be happy but not for to long because days would start getting added to the school year.

  • No I do not think that teachers should be keeping the kids out of school because they shouldn't have to not go to school because of teachers. I would be ok with it I wouldn't mind a break from school. Probably they are standing up for what they deserve so.

  • I don't think that kids should be kept out of school, because the students did not sign up for their teachers to walk out. They are there for an education and it is not fair for them to be cheated of their education.

Personally, if I was a kid I would have fun at the time, not going to school, but at the end of the year when the ciriculum was cut short, I would struggle with the days off.

I personally don't think I would go on strike. Teaching in West Virginia is something that they chose as their professions and they chose their own work and pay bygoing to college for teaching and chosing to live in West Virginia.
